Guest guest
Hi , Thanks!!!! The Providence brace is worn only at night. It is a bending brace. It slants him to one side and he can't bend at the waist when it is on. Our ped ortho recommended it. I did have a brochure on it but of course I can't find it. Maybe you can ask your doc about it. Guest guest
Hi, Have you ever heard of the Katharina Schroth Method - an exercise intervention to straighten scoliosis curvatures? A brace is usually recommended for adolescents if the curve progresses to more than a 25 degree Cobb angle, and then the patient enrolls in the program (see www.scoliosisrehab.com). I just learned about Schroth myself, from the National Scoliosis Foundation and the Scoliosis Research Society. Apparently, it has been used in Europe since the 1920's and for almost as long in Israel and Japan. It has just come to the US and there is only one center (in Wisconsin) that offers it, and a few scattered solo practitioners elsewhere (one in NYC, one in Palo Alto, one in Oregon, etc.). The Method has been shown to improve lateral deviation, rib hump, spinal rotation, back shape & profile, postural balance, lung capacity and function, pain, muscle strength, and spinal flexibility. It's geared to each individual's particular curvatures. A trained PT works one-on-one with the individual at least 6 hours a day, followed by cranio-sacral massage therapy (similar to myofascial release massage), which is an extremely gentle form of massage that stretches and releases 'kinks' in the fascia, or 'stocking' that holds all of the organs, muscles and soft tissues together. The Schroth Method is based on small movements and 'rotational breathing' (I'm not sure what that is) that act to de-torque the body, leading to improved symmetry and balance. According to the Wisconsin program's website: " The exercises, initially, will require assistance from a physical therapist. The goal is for you to be independent with the basic exercises and to be able to integrate these new movement patterns into your every day activities. The basic exercises include principles of: self-elongation, correction of the postural asymmetries - both passively and actively, isometrics, corrective breathing, and integration into your movement patterns with specific coordination exercises. To learn the exercises, you must understand your specific curvature and be able to feel the shape of your back. You will become more aware of the prominent and sunken areas in your back, and how you tend to hold your hips and shoulders. You will learn how to sense the position of your spine in space and correct this alignment from inside with muscle activation and the breathing mechanism. " I think this program is worth looking into. As someone who has already had surgery - and revision surgery - the Schroth program would only be minimally helpful (because I'm fused so extensively), but if my child developed scoliosis, I would definitely investigate this treatment/prevention method. I hope this helps! Best of luck, Andy > > I am a flatbacker and wonder how to help my God-daughter who was > recently diagnosed with a 30 degree curve in her lower back. Guest guest
I wore a Milwakee Brace for 7 years and then had surgery. My older sister wore it for 2 years and then 9 years later had surgery. Neither one of us have had great results. I would like to give you hope. I have a cousin and my husband has an aunt that had it. Both went to the same doctor we did and swam laps in a pool which we did not. They are both around 55-60 and doing great with no surgery!!!! Make sure she eats healthy too! Zade dsengplute <dsengplute@...> wrote: I am a flatbacker and wonder how to help my God-daughter who was recently diagnosed with a 30 degree curve in her lower back. The doctor has fitted her for a Providence Brace to be worn 18 hours a day. Have any of you had experience with this? Positive results? I look forward to hearing from you. __________________________________________________
