Our dog passed a few years ago and Zeb has been begging me for a Beethoven.He never did bother with our dog, a sheltie, that was scared to death of him.I haven't thought to much of it until this subject came up.It might be a good thing to look into.I know in this area we have the fidelco dogs for the sight impaired but that is all I have ever heard of. Guest guest Posted August 8, 2001 Report Share Posted August 8, 2001 OH, we had a st bernard once a few years back and he had perfect markings looked just like betoven,lol and the best dog ever, never chewed on anything, learned its obedience quickly, definately NOT hyper,lol, and nathan could lay on him and wrestle with him, and he would think nothing of it,lol. When we moved away from home for a few years a friend of hubbys wanted to buy him because he had a reletive who had a pup from same litter who was also awsome, and no place would let us keep hm when we moved. He still does great today. I remember reading on them before we decided, and they make great apartment dogs, ---usually lathargic lol, just like most men around the house,lol, and very compassionate and kind to everyone, quick learners, and the best thing i liked was most and he could tolerate nathan and his uncontroled strength. shawna. When you are investigating organizations for service dogs, here are some good questions to ask: How are the dogs brought into the program? Does the organization have a breeding program or are the dogs donated? If they are donated, how are they screened? How are the puppies raised? Are they in a kennel or in a home? What regular vet care is given and what are the standard practices of care during the first year? How are the puppies screened for training? What percentage of puppies are sent into training? How are the dogs trained? How long are they trained? Are the dogs certified for public access, and if so by what organization? What percentage of dogs graduate into service placements? If a dog is released from training for service, what happens to that dog? What would cause a dog to be released from training? That is all I can think of at the moment. Therapy dogs were not avaiable for my child when she was a flight risk, so i bought a collie. Collie's that are female will watch a mom and her behavior and take it on. I did work on border training with the dog and my dd at the same time with the first one, because dd would walk into the neighbors house, but we had 3 over the years, and every single one learned so naturally to keep my kids in the yard, would circle them if they tried to leave, bark constantly to alert me if someone went outside, and even grabbed the butt of some shorts when my daughter was trying to climb a fence. A resue group for collies is located in atlanta, though they require a fence. Does the dog go with the child to school, therapy, allowed to go in to stores, etc? What if you have other pets? It sounds like an awesome program. I think we're going to tour the Canine Assistants facility in January - it wasn't really with the idea of getting a therapy dog for Owen, but planning a facility for a dog rescue group I volunteer for. Guest guest Posted July 11, 2009 Report Share Posted July 11, 2009 I posted a couple of months ago about my quest to obtain a service dog. Things are looking good. After sending in all the applications and personal statements, the Kansas Service Dog Soc. said the next step in the process was for to send in a video of myself. I had to include very specific things: tell about myself, show home environment inside and out, show what I can and cannot do, show other pets, etc. We ended up with a 20 minute video which we had transferred to DVD and I sent it in. They just sent me a letter that after reviewing my DVD and other info that I would be a candidate for a service dog. All of their 2009 classes are filled so I will be in one of the 2010 groups. The next step is a one to two hour inverview that will take place next year. They want to make sure I know what I'm getting into and am willing to go through some intensive training. I'm excited. If anyone else is interested just Google assistance dogs and it will take you to a variety of sites. I chose KSDS because I live close and heard good things about them. Yes she did smother Dan with kisses but otherwise she is so scared she needs to be worked with and no one without a lot of lot and attention will give her the chance. I would love to have here she is a sheltie mix which makes her bigger than shelties but I am not sure what else she has in her. She has never once wagged her tail in enjoyment but it was good to see that if you are calm around her she will be calm and loving towards you. Maybe there is hope. Guest guest Posted May 9, 2010 Report Share Posted May 9, 2010 yes she was abused don't know her whole story but I do know that we are a kill shelter and without a lot of work or a transfer to a no kill that has foster help she will not make it. I am afraid she won't be there when we go back next Friday. We didn't go yesterday so I am not sure of her fate. She is a very beautiful dog too bad someone had to make her so scared.
