Hello Helen

No snow here. The weather has been very nice, in the mid 70's for

about a week now. The wind blows in from the south so I don't really

get a breeze going through the apartment since all windows face south.

You really need at least one window facing in another direction to get

decent airflow going. I find that keeping the windows open helps with

the sneezing.

I've figured out a good approximation of the Thai soup Tom Yum Koong

last night, tastes pretty good though the shrimps are a bit bland.

Last night was actually quite interesting. As I was getting ready to

experiment with soup making (I had made a giant pot of chicken stock

over the weekend and now needed to come up with ways to use the broth),

I get a phone call from my British friend . She had accidentally

locked herself out of her house and needed someone with a key to open it

up. The incident turned out to be far more interesting than that, she

had locked herself in her backyard in her slippers. The side gate to

the backyard was padlocked and the keys to that padlock was in the

house. The fence along the street has thorny brambles growing along

the top which makes it virtually impassable. The neighbough behind her

place would probably shoot anyone knocking on the backdoor and the

neighbour to the side was out of town. She decided to prop a ladder up

against the small bit of fence along the side of the house and got to

the top of the fence behind trees and bushes so she wasn't visible from

the street, she couldn't jump down cause she's 5 months pregnant so she

ended up fetching another ladder to drop down on the other side. Then

she tried to ring the neighbours doorbell but all the neighbours had set

up security fences such that you couldn't even get to the front door and

although some had door bells at the gates, most did not work and none of

them answers the door bell but rather expect visitors to call from a

cell phone. Finally one of her neighbours garage apartment tenants

showed up and called her neighbour to let her in. Then she realized

that she did not remember anyone's phone numbers cause they would all be

in her PDA. She didn't know about 411 but fortunately her neighbour

did and she tried to call Mike and who have keys but live much

closer than I, unfortunately their number was unlisted. Fortunately

mine was listed so she managed to get a hold of me.

I think a hollowed out stone may be in store as a future present for her.

Regards,

Hi ,

Once again, my sincerest apologies, for not being more reserved with my initial comments...

I probably could float out to you a photo of me...that shows my shape and degree of disability...Maybe that would soothe your fears...

Yes..I am a very happy soul and I do have a great bunch of friends who support me...and I don't ever dwell on negative stuff much...like my increasing deformity getting worse...

Anyway...If you'd like to see me...by all means...drop me an e-mail address to send it to...

Thank you...Jim...

Jim,

I am sure I am not the only person who would be interested in seeing

your photo. We have a number of photos and x-rays posted in our

" Photos " section at the Feisty website. Just click on " Photos " in the

list to the left on your monitor. (I will post my own x-rays if I ever

figure out how, duh. Loriann, one of our two erstwhile comoderators --

is the other, and they are both terrific people and a lot

nicer than I am sometimes, ahem -- sent me a post telling me the

procedure, and I have saved it and am now encouraged to study it once

more and do as she advised so as to upload my lovely -- NOT -- bionic

spine for all to see.)

Sight unseen, however, I have NO doubt that you are a totally, 100%

credentialed and qualified member of this group. You have been through

so much, as have so many of us if not all of us who got here before

you. In fact, you had only to mention " Luque rods " to gain immediate

entrance. We only learned in the past year or so that people with

Luque rods are now going through the same hell as those of us with the

classic Harrington rod.

I haven't checked the current membership count but expect it is well

over 600. I started this group in 2000 at the urging of several other

people. There were 8 of us at the beginning, and we were fairly

clueless in those days. Thanks to a wonderful and articulate pioneer,

Mina, who had posted her own flatback saga and some early

medical information online, we at least knew a little more than our

doctors were telling us. After a year or so, the group really took

off, and it has been going strong ever since. We also have an

offshoot-group which is very large and active as well as very sociable

-- I believe they have even had a couple of group get-togethers

outside the cyber world; they are called " Flatback-Revised, " and are

also a group. It is wonderful to see so many flatback victims

taking things in their own hands, sharing war stories and factual

information, being active and informed in their own spinal care.

It is also wonderful to see so much collective positive thinking,

humor, etc. There is no way to survive this thing without some of that

good stuff. In that regard, especially, we are blessed to have you

among us.

It also occurs to me that with all your energy, you might have some

interest in volunteering your efforts to this group in some regard

(apart from the posting that many of us do here). I am always sneakily

or shamelessly begging people to volunteer for anything that interests

them -- especially people who have any conceivable interest in

updating any of our various features (again, see the list on the left

at our site and click on anything that might interest you). I am

forever indebted to the folks who have volunteered for one challenge

or another over the years, whether for a short-term project or an

open-ended moderator spot. So let me know if there is anything you

would like to do in this regard -- and that goes for all of the rest

of you guys as well. Remember that you do not need to sign on for

anything permanent and you can get out whenever you might need to; we

all understand when medical contingencies or " real life " intervenes.

Best,
