Guest guest
I didn't set off the metal detector last week! 2 years ago I flew south to see my sister. Only in the Charlotte airport did my rod set off the metal detector, and it was a bit weird getting my back patted. But this year at the same airport I breezed right through. Maybe now that some of the 9/11 hoopla has died down they've turned down the sensitivity of the equipment a bit. They were probably getting a lot of metal implants slowing things down. Sharon Different types of instrumentation Hi All, Someone recently posted a question on the different types of spinal hardware that are used. I would be interested in what doctors are using. When my doc took out the old CD rods he inserted the Isola rod system. He uses it because he was one of the developers of the system. He explained that he donates all the royalties he receives from the Isola rods to spine research. My rods are steel and I know some are titanium. I really don't know the difference. All I know is that I always set off metal detectors at airports. Barbara Support for scoliosis-surgery veterans with Harrington Rod Malalignment Syndrome. Not medical advice. Guest guest
From what I've been told titanium is a lighter-weight metal than steel but the drawback is that it breaks easier, at least in harrington rods. It could be that other instrumentations hold up better in the titanium for its weight. Guest guest
Barbara... I always thought that I was setting off metal detectors at airports. It wasn't until 9/11, when we started having to remove our shoes when going through security, that I realized that most of my shoes contained a lot of metal. I have two different stainless steel systems attached to my spine, and now that I know about the shoe issue, realize that it wasn't the implants that set off the detectors. Guest guest
That's interesting. I'm not sure as this was 2 years ago, but the one time I set off a metal detector I might have been wearing stainless steel arch supports. However, when they went over me with the wand it was my back they wanted to check. I didn't have to take off my shoes. So maybe it was my back, and the metal detector was just on a more sensitive setting 2 years ago than it was last week when I went through the same airport. Guest guest
Hi Sharon... When I've been wanded, it always beeps when waved over my back. I wonder if it's picking up bra hooks or implants. -- > That's interesting. > > I'm not sure as this was 2 years ago, but the one time I set off a metal detector I might have been wearing stainless steel arch supports.
