Guest guest
I am an OT and in early training of MNRI. I work with a darling 1 1/2 year old girl with quad CP who HATES to be on her tummy. She has strong extensor tone in her arms and when placed prone extensor muscles ignite through her entire cute little body- followed by intense crying. I've tried a few trial and error things...thinking maybe it hurts her? But she will go prone over a ball for more than 5 min. And even on the floor briefly before she starts slowly tightening up and the hard crying begins. Maybe it scares her because of her cortical vision loss and she loses sense of her surroundings? But I sing/talk the whole time and hold her close. Maybe it's a behavior? Actually letting her " cry it out " has had the best success though it's hard to watch. Her mom has let her cry until she fell asleep and said it has been her best sleep ever. I've also tried abdominal re-ed and heavy joint rotation to decrease tone before positioning her with little success. Am I just giving up on the techniques to early? Or trying to make too huge of leaps in progress. I know MNRI philosophy is against forcing kids into positions and I understand that when a child's brain is in protection no learning- motor or otherwise can happen... but the therapist in me just can't avoid such an important developmental position. Any ideas would be much appreciated!!!
