Dear Bob,

Contact Dr. Sam at RegNDoc@... directly and he will be able to help but

needs all medical background info of your mom's records etc, also diet

intake, and all med. prescription drugs that she is on. Will have to get off

radiation and build immune system back up. Won't cost that much, either.

Hi ,

I'm so glad that you're mom's doing better. Did they figure out why she

has blood in her stools?

Are you taking care of yourself? Are you breathing at all?

How's your newest grand baby doing? Are you able to see her much?

Hug your mom and friends for me. Tell them that I'm praying for them.

Love ya!!!!

Liz,

Hi my sweet friend. The drs were 90% sure the blood was coming from a

bleeding ulcer. Early Sunday morning they attempted to do the test where

they put the tube down your throat and take a picture of your stomach. But

it just couldn't be done. Her throat has closed up so much due to the

dystropy that he it made it just impossible to do. He told us that if it

was his mother or any other member of his family that he would just build

up her energy, treat her for a peptic ulcer and let her go home. She has

been on the ulcer medicine for 7 days and the pain has gone away and her

stools are still bloody but they look like old blood. He thinks her ulcer

started with a bacteria in her stomach and has just gradually gotten worse.

We are convinced that the whole mess was caused from medication. She was

taking Actonel for her bones and that was when she started getting bad.

After 8 weeks of being on it we began to search information on it and the

side effects are disphysia , esophegal problems and ulcers. She already had

disphysia and esopegal probelems due to the muscular dystrophy and this

medication made everything worse. When I told the dr. that tried to do the

tube this, he said " I don't go to drs, they'll try to kill you!!! If you go

to a Dr. they'll find something wrong with you and start filling you full

of medicine that you probably don't need in the first place and will

probably do you more harm than good which is what we truly think happend.

At any rate she is home and feeling much better. we are going to have blood

tests today to make sure there is no more anemia.

I confess that my breathing has been shallow to say the least. Grabbing one

here and there but I did get up this morning and did my 40 breaths and now

I am off to check on mom.

My little Lillie is doing great! I told mom as soon as she is feeling up to

it that we will go to Lubbock to see Lilli one week and then the next we'll

go to Midland to see Olivia and . That really seemed to perk her up.

Thanks so much for your prayers and concerns. At 84 and so many health

problems I truly believe that prayer got her through this and although I

know there is more to come in the future, as for now she is feeling pretty

good.

Thanks again,

Love,

Hi Liz,

They are treating her ulcer with Biaxin and there's another one but I can't

remember the name. I spent most of the day with her and though she is still

a little weak she is doing so much better it is almost unreal! I know it is

attributed to all the prayers on her behalf and I give all the credit of her

healing to the Lord.

Thanks so much for your concern and friendship. They mean alot to me.

Hey everyone. I have to go special notice for a while. I just found out that

My mom is horribly ill and in surgery. They found inoperable tumors. Please

any prayers/candles would be a blessing. Her name is Helen . Thankyou.

Hello Anya,

I'm glad you had recourse to the list in your situation with your

Mother which I just read about. I related to it all, e.g., her dreams,

your relationship, on several levels, as I'm sure many of us did.

There's a time for personal sharing on these lists and this was one.

Thanks for sharing your crisis and glad to hear of the happy outcome.

Hi All,

I'm new here and trying to help my mother. She has Scoliosis,

stenosis and osteoarthritis in her spine. She is going to see a

scoliosis specialist in a few weeks here in Kansas City regarding

possible surgery. From what I understand from the back doc, her

whole spine is a mess, and he's not sure surgery will help. She

also has a bum knee and needs a replacement.

We live together as she just can't function some days. Sometimes

she won't take her pain meds and I find this very frustrating. She

always ends up in bed with worse pain, but continually fights taking

the pain meds. Do you have any suggestions regarding this?

Do you have any recommendations if the doc recommends rod surgery?

I don't even know what to ask the doc at this point. We are also

working on getting a consult at Mayo in MN.

Your suggestions are welcome.

Thanks,

cooky

Hi Cooky,

Being a caregiver, as well as a receiver, I understand your frustrations with your mother. I would suggest seeing if there is a Family Caregiver Support group in your area. I have found that type of group very helpful, as you not only get support for yourself but you learn more of what resources are available in your area. Number 1 rule, is to take care of yourself by taking time out for yourself so you can enjoy life, too and have the rest and patiences needed in caring for others. Number 2 rule, is to set boundaries. Let the person know what you are willing to put up with and what you are not. In your mother's case, if the doctor says she must take the pain medication and she refuses, then let her know that you won't run after her as much since she won't take care of herself and what she is able to do. This may sound cruel, but I believe she figures that by not taking her medication, she has control over her life and yours. If she continues to fight her medication, then you might need to enlist the help of others or even alternate living arrangements.

Be sure to let her doctor know what the home situation is, ask questions (like what the results would be if she doesn't take her medication) especially in front of her and ask what the options are. If the doctor recommends rod surgery, ask about the various outcomes for people that have an attitude like your mother's.

It sounds like you are in the process of role-reversal and it is not an easy process to go through. I live in Canada and I have a wonderful caregiving support group that I go to. If you don't have one in your area, let me know and I will send you some of the survival techniques that I have learned and the type of resources that I have available in your area that you might have something similar to rely on.

You're not alone.

Thanks Llweyn! I knew there was something I could do to help the situation. Although I am a social worker, it's particularly hard at times to think clearly because I have chronic lyme disease. This adds to the whole mess but mom and i generally get along quite well as long as she takes her meds. I have a huge support network, but I guess I should investigate a formal group for caregivers. Great suggestions. Since I originally posted she has decided through trial and error that she sees the value of pain meds and is taking them regularly. She just needs to understand/accept now that fatigue is part of the deal as well. She is dealing with the cycles of grief with her condition and is learning the hardcore reality of it. It's quite a psychological roller coaster ride around here with the two of us learning to live with chronic

conditions...LOL. She is also starting to look online and read more about her conditions. Bottom line is, I'm very thankful for her extending her home to me in my time of crisis and honored to be in a position to help her in her time of need. Thank you for your suggestions.
