Guest guest
I am really wondering about auditory processing---separate of actual hearing. That's just me.On Wed, Jan 20, 2010 at 8:16 AM, Palasti <lisapal@...> wrote: Hi there, I have a client who I see for RDI (Relationship Development Intervention) her son has Autism and a a co-occurring speech disorder which can make his speech very difficult to understand. It has been labelled as dysarthria and apraxia/dyspraxia or an oral motor disorder (by various SLPs over the years). He seems to have ok strength in his jaw/lips/tongue, but does have some differentiation problems. Basically, he does " velar fronting " : he is not stimulable for /k/ or /g/ or /sh/ or /ng/, and can only approximate /l/ and /th/ with a lot of effort. One of her frustration thus far is that the SLPs all want to work on his articulation word by word, or sound by sound, and no one seems to be able to tell her WHY he is having such trouble, or what we can be doing to help " get his mouth to work right " , to carry out the speech signals that his brain is sending. This client has been educating herself on various models and trying to find some therapy that will help her child overcome his articulation issues. I am encouraging her to attend one of Dr. Masgutova’s workshops this spring. I would love to hear any insights anyone may have about how reflex integration can help her son and why she should attend the workshop. (She is pretty on board already based on my encouragement but I also am a newbie to reflex integration so I wanted to give her some more information if possible.) Thank you! Guest guest
Hi . Facial reflexes would be very beneficial for this client. Which workshop are you recommending for the mom? I am still in California, just having left the MNRI clinic in Buena Park. Would be happy to talk to you about this client on my return. Guest guest
Hi Joan, Thanks for the email. I was recommending Children with Challenges to begin since it will be in Guelph at your center in April. The facial reflex course maybe something she would consider in the future but I think she will need to have a better understanding before she would be willing to travel out of the country to attend such a workshop. Thanks – would love to chat upon your return. I hope all is going well in California! Palasti RDI Program Certified Consultant lisapal@...
