Thanks that does help.  I am coordinating a class in the New Orleans area and am looking forward to learning even more from R.

Date: Wed Oct 6, 2010 4:31 pm ((PDT))Hi Kayte,It might be helpful to think of the Fear Paralysis, or startle refex assomething like the thermostat in your house, except in the house when

itgets cold the heater comes on. With FP when there is too much information itinitiates the response, which is to contract and shut out stimuli. Like athermostat, ideally you want FP set to the most comfortable setting, where

it turns on when you need it, and it just sits in the background waiting therest of the time. Again, like in a house, if the set point is outside of thefunctional range, you spend most of your time dealing with the sensory input

(too hot or cold, too loud, bright etc.)The Fear Paralysis exercise you are doing raises the threshold for firing ofthe reflex response. How it does this is by repeatedly meeting the thresholdwith the tapping protocol, and allowing her body to accept that there is no

response needed for that level of stimulation. What I think you are seeingwith your daughter is a mild response to startle stimuli, which actuallyjust means that you are doing the exercise

correctly. I also thought thatyour choice to back off a little, but come back to the reflex work later on,was excellent.Because this is a body level educational exercise, very much like learningto swim, you should expect to do it for a while, twice a week over several

months at a minimum. This type of core response usually does not respondquickly to adjustments, and cannot be rushed. (This makes sense when youconsider that FP is the only response to all environmental stimuli for many

primitive animals and it has to balance threat with nutrition andreproduction. Set point changes need to average global conditions over timeto continue to serve the needs of the organism. Any sudden shift in the set

point due to trauma etc. serves the immediate need at the cost of theoverall needs of the animal. This is perhaps the best explanation for theevolution of higher level threat processing which we see with Fight

andFlight, enabling animals to identify immediate vs. long term threat, andto multi-task.)  Anyway, I would plan to do at least some Fear Paralysis andother reflex work on an ongoing basis until your daughter can be

re-evaluated perhaps in a years time.I hope this is of some help.
