Guest guest
Can I please have one thing to say without our moderator censoring it? It is freedom of speech, and my opinion. I DID write about this once before, and got pretty much Booed off in shame, so I stopped writing, but just continued to lurk and try to gather up information about my own horrors of The Harrington Rod (from 1970,) and the inevitable Flatback that followed . I originally had my 1st surgery at 15/ turned sweet 16 laying flat on my back in a body cast at that time. Done By Dr. Hugo Keim in Columbia Pres. Still have post tramatic syndrome of those days. So when I heard about 25 years later I needed a revision surgery, I would of liked to have died, or the consequence would be to slowly (which was becoming rapidly) fold in half and crush my lungs and what ever else was in the way. This, besides the PARALYZING PAIN that literally knocked the breath out of me and made my legs buckle, daily. Then there was the sleeping at night, or should I say LACK of it, and hip pain (only to be told over & over it was bursitis). Well, at the age of 46,(at that time) I could not function, and knew the only answer was to bite the bullit and go for the revision. But in the meantime, for the few years that I was experiencing excruciating pain, body fatigue, hunching over, sleepless nights, I had a spiritual "healing" done that literally gave me back my life. YES OF COURSE I still had Flatback, and was still hunched over, but I could suddenly roll myself over in bed! I could get out of bed and actually walk first thing in the morning. I could carry my newborn Grandson, and as a few months passed, I could get on the floor with him and play...AND get back up...by myself!!! ALL THIS, MIND YOU, WITH N O P A I N P I L L S!!! She did a healing over the phone, along with a Reiki healing. I just can't say enough good things about her! Eventually I had my surgery with Dr. Errico in NYU on Sept. 13, 2004, and again, while I was in the hospital, requested that the hospital send up a Reiki Practioner to give me a session when I was getting breakthrough pain. It immediately helped. This is not "voo-doo", but the moderators on here made me feel as if it was. So, I just stopped writing here. I only wanted to bring my story here, and maybe try to help out even just one person who is having back spasms and a 0 quality of life. She can take away the pain, and even set you up on a maintenance program if you'd like, but can not straighten your spine or put the lordosis back in. One other thing to keep in mind here, before condemming what I say is...if Alternative Medicine is such Bull, than why are most of the BIG Hospitals employing Reiki Practicioners? And also, why live in such pain when you DON'T have to??? If anybody is interested in giving this a shot, you can E-mail me at Shanesnan@... and just do your own research on her, for living with disease of Flatback, but with some kind of dignity, energy, and painfree days and nights. At some point you might feel,"what have I got to lose? It's SO worth a phone call to her. God-bless you all for what you all are going through, even if you can't handle a healing. I do still pray for all my scoilo/flatback "sisters & brothers" for some kind of relief. It's a crummy life we've been dealt, but we can try to make the best of it. Sincerely, __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Hi, -- Thanks for your post, which I did not get to until now because of my hospitalization. I am sorry if you felt " censored " at some time in the past. I do not remember any such incident. Unless you were promoting some specific commercial healing enterprise or practitioner, I can't imagine why anyone would have protested. We have never opposed people's writing about their alternative or holistic healing experiences. I once had a little reiki myself and found it quite helpful, although I have not tried it for back pain. I also had a wonderful experience with Feldenkrais. It is true that we probably lean toward treatments used by allopathic physicians, probably because most of us just have to grit our teeth and go in for surgery. But there are many modes of healing out there, and many of them are incredibly helpful as adjuncts to the surgical help we often need. I am glad to hear you found something so helpful to you -- not to replace the surgery, but to make your horrible pain so much better in the meantime. I had a very similar experience with my Feldenkrais practitioner. She said if I gave her four years, I might not need surgery at all. As it turned out, I did not get my surgery till four years later. I don't for a minute believe that she was being realistic, but I sometimes wonder how much she could have done to help me. After three sessions -- this was in the earliest stages of my disabling flatback -- she had me walking almost upright. It was unbelievable. I got the sessions as a gift from someone in the congregation I belonged to at the time. Unfortunately I could not afford to continue them on my own. I also got some hypnosis sessions for free with a clergyman sent to my bedside by Dr. Rand, with the idea of relaxing me before surgery. The surgery went well, but I have no way of knowing what part the hypnotism may have played. I think you will find that we are pretty open-minded at this group. I am sorry to hear that you had an experience to the contrary -- particularly if I contributed to it or encouraged it in some way. I will hope to go through the message archives and find out what was said at that time. I am truly sorry that whatever reaction you got discouraged you from writing to us. I am sure that many members would be very interested to hear more about your history and your experiences with healing -- surgical or other.
