Guest guest
Joyce, I do have a very sharp burning pain deep in the buttock, which my massage therapist confirms is my piriformis muscle. I can not sit, stand still or walk any distance...The only positon that is pain free is laying in an almost fully reclined position..or sleeping. Needless to say I am not getting much done! When this all came about for me I couldn't believe that it was my back as Doctor Rand said, because my back didn't (and still doesn't) hurt at all. But that is how it works with the sciatic nerve, as I understand it....pressure up on the nerve root in the lumbar spine can trigger the pirifomis muscle (which the sciatic nerve runs under - or in some people right on through)down deep in the butt. I guess it is like a constant spasming/triggering of that muscle that causes so much pain. It can be pretty intense, depending on what I am trying to do. Of course the usual caveats apply. None of this means that this is the same thing going on with you! As I said, for me, the lidocaine does not seem to do much more than maybe take a little of the edge off... and other than making a very big effort not to sit any more that absoutely necessary, I find that ice packs work the best. I bought three of the reusable Ace gel packs. I already use elactic/velcro lumbar supports...and I slide the pack between my brace and underwear and keep that puppy chilled....it does calm things down and signifigantly reduce the pain. I know you took a fall...if it is more than 24 hours past I think most injuries can safely be iced...so no matter what is causing your pain perhaps you could try the " ice it into submission " technique until you see your doctor. Or call and ask if that would be okay. I hope this helps, even a little... Best of wishes, Cam
Guest guest
Hi Cam. Thanks for the advice. As much as I hate the ice approach, I will give it a try.
