Chip,

This evening I'm packing for a weekend Feldenkrais workshop, I'm

presenting to a group of physical therapists in Portland. I'll post

an in depth answer when I return.

The Feldenkrais Method is a method of retraining and refining motor

patterns in humans.

It is not a fitness or exercise system !!!

The method approaches movement and postural organization from a

neurological perspective. It is strongly based in developmental

learning theory and has found considerable success in working with

neurological injuries and diseases.

In terms of athletic endeavors, the most common usage has been in

refining motor patterns after an injury. It can be useful to the

elite athlete to hone their sport specific patterns. I believe that

it may be the next major training ingredient. It is an effective

method for long term neuro-muscular training.

For the record I'm a certified practitioner (requires a 4 years study

program) with a fultime practice in Portland for 12 years.

I went through 1 session of feldenkrais 4 years ago - it was an hour long

and movement was the focus - the gal told me she generally worked with

dancers and martial arts people - I was the first lifter she had worked on.

it did for a period of around 1 week make me very aware of the continuity of

movement in my body - that if I turned my head, the shoulder followed, etc.

It also made me more flexible for a short time.

The feeling was very interesting - the work was performed fully dressed in

shorts and tshirt, on a low bed type table. A lot of rocking motions.

This same gal works on horses and dogs too. Again, it's just interesting to

me - and I've no true understanding of the mechanism - but I felt oddly

light on my feet for a couple of days after the treatment. I can see where

it is useful to dancers and martial arts people. (the modalities I use in

my practice are deep tissue, sports, and swedish).

I couldn't agree more. And I think for at least some of the people in our lives who don't quite get what our problem is, looking at a spinal film can be very instructional -- and sometimes a real shocker! So you tried Feldenkrais too? I loved Feldenkrais. A friend gave me four private sessions as a gift. In the end I only managed to connect with the practitioner for three of those sessions, but I found them almost miraculously helpful for my pain and deformity. (This was while I was going down the tubes, before I had the revision surgery.)If only they weren't so expensive, as you mentioned. (The cost for each session I had was about $100, and that was back in the late 90s.) I would love to find some affordable way of pursuing this kind of body work for a longer period of time. I just can't praise it enough.Best,>> Before my July surgery, I had spent the last 3 years on pain killers, crying, in bed, not able to sit for more than a minute... as you all know... yes I did get some relief from an inversion table twice a day and swimming 4 times a week... and Feldenkrais (which became unaffordable at $80 a session). Every doctor that was on my husbands insurance plan was unfamiliar with flatback. I no longer wanted to live the pain became so bad. Then one day our insurance changed. I went to a flatback specialist. When my husband finally saw the x-ray he understood. There were my bottom 3 vertebrae resting bone on bone. The discs had also slipped and were hanging off each other with more disc hanging off then on... > > At that moment he changed. He FINALLY understood the pain I had been in.... I do not think anyone who is not going through this can understand the pain we are living with. I thank him everyday for staying with me! > > For those who have there partners by them, thank them, bring them in... cherish them.> >
