Jo Ann,

Where I used to work, if a person was totally disabled for longer

than six months before they were age 65, they would be eligible to

apply for long-term disability payments through the employer's LTD

plan. They also were told to apply for Social Security Disability

benefits. I can't remeber if approval for SSD affected the amount of

their LTD income payments or not. If they remained disabled, they

would stay on long-term disability status until they were age 65. At

age 65, their status changed from being on LTD to being

officially " retired " .

The best thing to do is to check with your employer's benefits/human

resource people, because I'm not sure if the way my employer handled

these things holds true for everywhere.

Also, I'd look at the written information that you have about your

employee benefits, as it may spell it out for you. If you don't have

written information, ask your employer for it.

Good luck,

loriann
