Hi...

I'm sure it depends on where you donate. At UCSF, they allow people

to donate every 4 days if their hematocrit is normal.

I believe most insurance companies don't cover freezing blood. Again,

at UCSF, it's $200 a unit to freeze a unit of blood.

Dear " crooked dancer " ,

If you schedule it right and keep your iron levels high enough, the most you

could donate is 4 pints in thirty days, because you need to have at least

seven days between each donation.

-Red Cross is allowing me to donate once every 7 days, and they will

only keep blood for 35 days. They will freeze it if my surgery date

changes suddenly, but don't like to do that because blood can break

down and be worthless.

Thank you

I have been slightly anemic, not too long ago and I was taking Iorn

vitamins (over the counter) My fanily Dr was cheking cheking my Iorn

levels, their normal now. I will be taking my time at schedualing

surgery and I will be talking to my family Dr as well about this,

maybe he can keep an eye on my Iorn levels when I start donating, I

also have small veins and that is onother bit of concern for me.

My husband is O (neg)?(pos)? anyway all type, he wants to help

donate for me that would help. I might be able to manage 4pts.

Well, learn as I go!

Thanks again .

Really? Break down and be worhless if frozen?

In how many days? Or mths?

And then what, throw it away? or give it to someone else!

It has an expiration date? You don't need to answer all these

questions Joann, I,m just being fiesty.

Good luck with you're blood donation Joann and you're upcoming

surgery.

I *think* that whole blood is good for around 42 days max (what I

was told when I donated for myself). Don't take this as gospel...my

memory could be wrong. If the Red Cross says 35, they're giving

themselves some space. After that time, blood components break

down. (I'm not sure what breaks down, just that it does.) Freezing

destroys the blood cells but leaves plasma so you're not getting the

whole benefit by using frozen blood. (Kind of like diet coke

instead of the full strength coke :-)

I don't know how long frozen blood can keep. I do know that the

process is relatively complicated. Any blood, frozen or or otherwise,

that you have self-donated to the Red Cross, cannot be used by anyone

else. If you cancel surgery, the blood is thrown away.

Thats interesting , thank you. That makes more sence to me

now, fresh blood has more " umph " than frozen blood, and since this

is major surgery we need all the " umph " we can get, you're diet

coke, full stregth coke explanation makes sence. I understand why

I need to do this.
