Jackie,

I have a lead for you. Goggle Dr. Boachie-Adjei. I found him on www.hss.edu. He was born in Ghana and is now one of the premier revision specialists in the US. He has set up the Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine in West Africa. I would suggest that you contact him. Explain your history and diagnosis and ask him to refer you to a physician in South Africa. It's a start. I hope it works!

Best of luck to you!

HELLLLLPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!

I am a 41 year old female living in south africa and have just been diagnosed with flat back syndrome. I have had fusions from t1 to l3 with a Harrington rod - this was done when i was 13 to correct 2 curves - one on top and one on the bottom. I had never heard of flatback and only now after looking on the net see that this is extremely common for harrington rod operations!! the doctor has advised that he thinks i need to have corrective surgery and i am terrified!! firstly in the town i live in there is no doctor that can do the operation so i would have to go to Johannesburg and secondly he told me that he has only done the surgery on 2 other patients with spinal deformaities. he is talking about opening me up, removing the rods, taking wedges out of my spine and some of the fusion and then bolting the whole lot together again!!!i have tried to look on the net if there is anything that can be done assit flatback? is this progressive?? is it going to get worse the older i get?? i am trying to get as much info as i can so that i can make an informed decision, but sometimes living in Africa does have it downfalls!!Please please can someone help!
