Guest guest
Hi Barbara - I was really suprised to read what you said about the Sryker frames. I had my first Harrington surgery in 1979 & I was on one for the entire 2 weeks post surgery. Oh ya...by the way... my Mom used that Pssssssst aerosol to clean my hair. Does anyone else remember Pssssssst? LOL......................Kathy > > I had my first scoli surgery in 1962. After reading the posts on us older folks, I just have to say kudos to all of our moms. I think just about everyone comented on how well their moms took care of them. My mom was great too, but I never realized it until later. She had no help, no visitors from family or church although my dad would help when he could. I heard the phrase " nervous breakdown " a few times and that's when I realized what a struggle it was for her. > > The funny thing is I have no memory of how my hair was washed. I know it was washed but just can't remember the details except for the MiniPoo. My cast went from just under my arms to the bottom of my hips.My doctor did a cool thing he put an extra cast sock on my torso and the material was longer on the top and bottom. He gave my mom an extra body sock and she would safety pin the clean one to the one under the cast and as she was pulling out the dirty sock the clean one would be pulled in. Made me feel quite a bit fresher. > > Do you remember transistor radios? Everyone had them and they even came with an ear plug. My radio was my constant companion. I'm glad I was only 13 at the time so I wasn't totaly aware of what was being done to me. Those memories came later. Did anyone ever see an iron lung? There were a lot of polio kids in the crippled kids hospital where I spent most of my time. It wasn't being used but was scary looking. I felt sorry for the kids on Stryker beds. They were mostly used for those who were paralyzed. Sure seems lik the dark ages. >
