Guest guest
I think it’s stainless steel. Titanium is really expensive and hasn’t been widely used that long. Guest guest
From Wiki: Surgical stainless steel is a specific type of stainless steel, used in medical applications. The chromium gives the metal its scratch-resistance and corrosion resistance. The nickel provides a smooth and polished finish. The molybdenum gives greater hardness, and helps maintaining a cutting edge. Although there are myriad variations in the recipes, there are two main varieties of stainless steel: martensitic and austenitic; see the stainless steel article. The word 'surgical' refers to the fact that these types of steel are well-suited for making surgical instruments: they are easy to clean and sterilize, strong and corrosion-resistant. The nickel/chrome/molybdenum alloys are also used for orthopaedic implants as aids in bone repair, as a structural part of artificial heart valves, and other implants. Immune system reaction to nickel is a potential complication[citation needed]. In some cases today titanium is used instead in procedures that require a metal implant which will be permanent. Titanium is a reactive metal, the surface of which quickly oxidizes on exposure to air, creating a microstructured stable oxide surface. This provides a surface into which bone can grow and adhere in orthopaedic implants but which is incorrodible after implant. Thus steel may be used for temporary implants and the more expensive titanium for permanent ones.[citation needed] Most surgical equipment is made out of martensitic steel-it is much harder than austenitic steel, and easier to keep sharp. Depending on the type of equipment, the alloy recipe is varied slightly to get more sharpness, or strength. Implants and equipment that are put under pressure (bone fixation screws, prostheses, body piercing jewelry), are made out of austenitic steel, often 316L and 316LVM, because it is less brittle. 316 surgical steel is used in the manufacture and handling of food and pharmaceutical products where it is often required in order to minimize metallic contamination. It is also used in the manufacture of body piercing jewellery and body modification implants. harrigton rod material Hello, I had my harrington rod surgery in 1978 by Dr. Keim in NY. Guest guest
I don't believe titanium was used until the late 1990's. My surgeries were in 1996 using TSRH System Instrumentation, and it was stainless steel. S. harrigton rod material Hello, I had my harrington rod surgery in 1978 by Dr. Keim in NY. Guest guest
My rod was placed in 1977 and we were told at that time it was stainless steel. Don't know if that's factual, but that's what we were told. Guest guest
As far as I know you can't have one but I was told by a technician that she would try as long as she knew--I dont think so because right after she told me that she refused to do an MRi on a man who had been shot and may still have a piece of lead in him. That sounded weird to me so now I know if I ever needed one From: toblueeyez <toblueeyez@...>Subject: harrigton rod material Received: Monday, September 20, 2010, 10:23 AM Hello,I had my harrington rod surgery in 1978 by Dr. Keim in NY.Does anyone happen to know what the rod is made of? Guest guest
You can have an MRI, it's just the metal distorts the images in the area where it's implanted. The rod is secure enough that the MRI won't harm you. Guest guest
Funny, thats where Bobecko ended up going just a few years after he did my surgery. I recently learned that he too passed away-from bone cancer. Kinda ironic that an ortho would end up with bone cancer....he was a great Dr-and without him who knows where i would be. Guest guest
I had an MRI done on my back. They told me that It would not hurt me and that I wouldn't ever notice. That was not true though, I felt it heat up which upset me because I wasn't expecting this. After it heated up, there wasn't a problem but it was worse because of not knowing what to expect. Anyway, I think the reason why they say you can't have an MRI done is because the images around the rod will not be readable. I heard that the MRI will not hurt the rod but you won't be able to see the vertebrae by the spine where the rod is. That was my experience.ericaFrom: L M <mariconda_l@...> Sent: Tue, September 21, 2010 12:03:27 PMSubject: Re: harrigton rod material I have had a number of MRIs even though I have a harrington rod and experienced no problems.Cheers,From: Izarah Star <izarahstar@...> Sent: Mon, September 20, 2010 9:38:57 PMSubject: Re: harrigton rod material yes i meant stainless steel. i was also told recently that b/c of the stainless steel i could never have an MRI. anyone else heard this?? Guest guest
I've had multiple brain and c-spine MRIs over the past few years to monitor another medical condition. My original surgery was in 1989 and implanted stainless steel hardware from T4-L4. My revision in 2007 extended the fusion to the sacrum and added a lot more hardware. I had an MRI last month with no problems. Like others have said, if the scan gets too close to the metal it will distort the image. But for me, it has always been perfectly safe to have the scans done. Perhaps some other doctors are just being extra cautious when they recommend against it? > > > From: toblueeyez <toblueeyez@...> > Subject: harrigton rod material > > Received: Monday, September 20, 2010, 10:23 AM > > > Â > > Hello, > I had my harrington rod surgery in 1978 by Dr. Keim in NY. > Does anyone happen to know what the rod is made of?
