Guest guest
Hi Elspeth, I have the memory-foam mattress topper that I got through a Sears mail insert flyer. I later pick up the memory-foam pillow that is curved for side-sleepers. As I said before, I prefer my waveless waterbed but since my husband didn't like the waterbed, the memory-foam is the next best thing. I also use a pillow wedge for under my knees (actually it's a body pillow folded in half or thirds, depending on how sore I am at the time) when I feel like sleeping on my back. Everyone is different but this is my experience. Llweyn Memory Foam, for the third try! He Everyone, This is the third time I've tried sending this message. Sorry. I was wondering if any Flatbackers have tried the new memory foam mattresses? I currently sleep with various pillow wedges and other stacks of pillows (my poor husband calls it my " rig " ) and I admit I'm intrigued by the commercials for the memory foam mattress. They cost a bundle, so before I let go of the cash I was hoping someone in the group had tried one and could testify on thier behalf. Guest guest
Hi elspeth! I have a Tempur-Pedic matteress and love it. It was expensive but worth it for me. We also have the topper on one of our beds. That doesn't work as well for me but I think it's because the mattress itself is bad. -Kathi (PS: I have 2 little dogs who love the Tempur-Pedic also. They minute they climb on the bed - they are out like a light!) __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Hi, Elspeth: I have the Tempurpedic, and love it. However, before I had the revision surgery, no mattress was effective for helping me sleep; I had to have bed wedges to prop me up in the hospital-bed position. Tempurpedic makes bed wedges for your back and legs that you can get at Relax the Back and other stores. I found wedges to be much less expensive than hospital beds, and much more effective than trying to keep from falling off big piles of pillows that kept rearranging themselves. Post-revision, it was very weird to actually be sleeping next to my husband instead of towering above him like I had been for years. Just my $.02. Also, in some states, if you have a doctor's Rx for " orthopedic mattress, " you can be exempt from sales tax. (True for sure in Texas; don't know about other states.) Best, Elissa > Hi elspeth! Guest guest
Elissa, When were you revised? And did you have the memory foam mattress before revision? xoxo's
Guest guest
Hi, : My revision was about 18 months ago -- January and February, 2003. I had the Tempurpedic before then -- I got it in 1997 when I first developed painful flatback symptoms and couldn't sleep on a regular mattress anymore. It turns out that the Tempurpedic was no help for me then -- I had to sleep in a hospital-bed position to be comfortable no matter how good the mattress was, so I got the Tempurpedic bed wedges for back and knees. But, we kept the mattress anyway. As soon as I had my surgery, I could start enjoying the general niceness of the Tempurpedic mattress itself, but pre- revision, there's not a mattress in the world that I could have slept on -- I had to have my back and knees elevated to keep my facets and disks from grinding together. If you're pre-revision, have difficulty sleeping without pain, and have not yet tried sleeping in the hospital bed position (propped up with pillows or wedges), I recommend at least trying it to see if it temporarily fixes the problem. Many pre-revision people report success with this; for example, I believe slept in a beloved reclining chair pre-revision, which is essentially the same position: knees elevated, head and back slightly elevated, no " backwards " pressure on the disks below the fusion. For me, as weird as it was to spend years sleeping sitting up, it was vastly preferable to not being able to fall asleep for the pain or drugging myself to the point that I'd fall asleep but wake up in agony. Just my $.02, and I may well be misreporting 's chair. Elissa > Elissa, > When were you revised?
