Good luck with it Yolanda! Please let us know when you get a specific date

scheduled. Just to let you know - the anterior surgery is " typically " easier to

deal with, but the incision itself is hard. Because it's in the abdomen, it

makes it very painful to cough, breath deeply, use abdominal muscles for sitting

up/rolling over/etc. Someone gave me the very good tip of taking a pillow or

large stuffed animal with me to the hospital to hold against my incision when I

needed to cough or roll over. It was a great help!

Yolanda,

I am so very sorry that you are having to have another surgery. On the other hand, I am glad that they are going to do something to help resolve your problems. You have really been through so much and I am hopeful that this surgery will be the one that helps you get back to living your life pain free. I have heard that scar tissue can cause a variety of problems and I hope they can resolve that for you. I will be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers. Keep us posted on how you are doing.

Jeanne

Another surgery.

Hi there,Well this is me back from Germany again. Well I am on the list for another operation in January or februari. To be honest I am glad because I was kind of frightend that there might not be a solution. They are going te do an anterior fusion of L2-L3. L3- L4 is probably not possible. The movement does not have to be big to cause the trouble I am having because I have a lot of scartissue on the nervers and dura. He said it is just a little and that can cause movement can give trouble. It finaly is my choice because prommises can not be given. It is only a minor operation compared to the opertion the last time. I beleve that because of all the back operations I had the flatback correction is the worst!. Now I have to get my insurance to pay again, they probably will but I have to get it on paper again. Thanks for listning,Yolanda> >> > Hi there,> > I was doubting if i should write, because it always feels like complaining. But then again it feel good to share. > > I had my second flatback surgery in Germany febuary this year wich was a rough time. After six months I finaly felt a lot better, was able to walk, stand still and straight, had no loss of control of my legs anymore. Something happend, I had more pain for a while suposingly because I do more and have got rid of my brace. Last week I went for a little walk and my legs felt "funny" I knew the feeling but just kind of pushed it away and walked on. I got home but by that time I had lost controle of lifting my hips and knees, it took about 3 days to return leaving a left leg not realy doing as i say and huge power loss. Now today it happend again am lying on my bed about the whole day to recover again. I cryed because this is not normal and I have had this before my operation (oh no, not again!!!). I still have movement in my spine so I suppose it has something to do with it. I was suposed to have a anterior surgrey but they said it probably was not nessesary. Now I hope they will still be able to fix it... > > The 30 th of Novemeber I have an appointment again. I have fought so hard (like a lot of you have) Now I keep thinking :"please do not let it all be for nothing..."> > > > Yolanda The Netherlands> >>

  • 2 weeks later...

Going off of my own experience as well as what I've heard from others on these

groups, the majority of the " work " was done during the posterior surgery. The

anterior portion for me, while very risky due to the possibility of vascular and

gastrointestinal complications, didn't include much other than the packing in of

extra fusion material to help be sure the the fusion solidified well on all

sides of the spine. So in that sense, the anterior wasn't too hard of a surgery

for me. The havoc it wreaked on my bowels and the pain of the anterior incision

tho were harder to deal with than that of the posterior surgery.

I've heard others on these lists mention that if they had to get an anterior

surgery done at a later point (from some of those surgeons who do a

posterior-only approach with the possibility of needing an anterior later on)

that it's not a " piece of cake " by any means, but that it typically doesn't lay

a person up in the same manner as when they originally got there fusions revised

in the posterior surgery. There is nowhere near as long of a recovery from that

as from their posterior surgery. If there aren't new manipulations of the spine

or osteotomies, there isn't near the trauma in that regard that a person would

get in their posterior surgery. Now, if a person were getting an anterior

surgery where there were new manipulations being done (versus going in there to

add new packing/fusion material and perhaps some additional hardware to

stabilize things), then I would suspect that would be a vastly different

experience than what I had.

I hope that made sense. Perhaps your anterior surgery involved a lot of

different things than mine. But my experience was that, other than what I

mentioned previously, it wasn't too bad compared to the posterior where the

majority of the work was performed.
