The neurologist who called in a shrink after Yolanda's temporary loss of leg function is a fool. So the scene is .... patient with a spinal condition claims her legs don't work. I know, I'll call in a psychiatrist because it may be hysteria!!

Most of my neurologists have been decent. But that neurologist you saw, Yolanda - oh, wow! How amazing that when he could not diagnose a serious neurological symptom (temporary loss of function in both legs), he called in a psychiatrist to check your mental status. It seems to me that "hysterical" paralysis may have been more common in Freud's day, but I believe it is virtually unheard of these days. I think I have met one person in my entire life, a wonderfully kindly and lovable older nun, who had lost the use of her legs for ostensibly intrapsychic reasons. Reciprocal Groetjes (hope I spelled that right!), >> Hi Elizabeh,> What a story! It is indeed unbelevable that threre are doc's like this! The way you describe your docter back then does sound very familiar. I think lots of us have had doc's like this.It is good to know that I am not the only one. To be honest it is not my first bad experience. The more docters you see the more troubels you can get at the next. I noticed that they are usaually very frienly when I tell my complaints and then the picturs do not show the problems as they expect and they do not now how to help (or do not take me serious). It took at least ten years before a docter realized I had flatback syndrome wich I and many other docters had never heard of) Now my flatback was even worse than before the first flatback was reparaird and was very clear. > Neurologist are mostly the worst of the kind.

Hi ,

It does me good to read your reaction and consern.

You know what even worse is than waiting for a date for my apointment and what

they will do? That I am even more terrifeid that they will just say O well, it

is oke and we will leave it as it is and see what happens! The operation was

plannend a week later than the first operation and I was sent home with the

words : The proffessor is sending you home and he wants to see how things

develop and in three months he will decide what and if another operaiton is

nessasary. You must understand that it is real stressing to have another

operation but I am more stressed that they will leave it this way to still see

what happens " It is difficult to explain to friends that I prefere to have

another operation to be sure it all stays in place.

One of the docters said that the corection was needed for stability and because

they could not make enough correction from the back.

Later on they sent me home..

Well the thing is that I have noticed that I am still standing forward with my

knees streched. I do not now if it that was already like this directly after the

operation (I might not have noticed because of the huge differece from before)

or that it has become worse during these three months. I do have a brace up to

my collor bones when out of bed. I know te doc said I was not totaly in balance

but it seems to be bothering me very much now and I am having a fight with my

brace since a couple of weeks.

I wrote an email this weekend letting them now that I am worried about this and

will phone them tomorrow again. I just want this apointment before the 24th of

May and want to know wat is going on, or not going on in my spine.

It is a great stressing period, my dad landed in hospital when I was in

hospital, now they found a tumor on mu mums eggleaders wich is not known if it

is benign or not. She is of to hospital in three weeks.

I am getting better in the sence that I am walking around a lot more than a

couple of weeks ago and sitting seems to be getting a bit better too. I can sit

for about 15 min.

You asked about the help we get from the Dutch goverment.

Well I have had 6 hours a week for years now and 16 hours till about the kids

where 4 years old. I do have to pay a part of it about 100 euro's a month

(depends on how much I get and my partner earns). It has changed the last couple

of years and it is usally real difficult to get any help if you have a healthy

partner even if he works or not.

Luckly I live in a very social place with a great council wich certainly does

help. I did not expect to get so many hours (24) from them. They said that it

was nessesary for the kids to stay with there mum and not been put it to day

care at once, or been sent to differnt places. It was not good for them, when

they are used to being at home and with there mum most of the time they said. I

was actually very surprised and thankfull for not having the problem of having

to do more than I acutally could.

If you need help for youself like washing, or getting dressed you always get

help.

I will try to change the subject if nessacary but I dont know if I will always

do this the right way. Elaine or a friend of Elains posted under " Back from

germany " I changed the subject to dear elaine later on.

Hi, Yolanda --

I'm so sorry to hear about your parents' medical issues. Why do these stresses

always seem to come in multiples, all at the same time?

Good for you that you're keeping at the guys in Germany. They need to be told

emphatically that you are insisting on proper care. You know your own body

better than anyone, and you are rightly sensing that some correction remains to

be done. Let's hope they take the hint and get off their behinds and do right by

you! (Not to be TOO outspoken or opinionated or anything.)

Your Dutch system for allotting benefits through a localized council sounds just

terrific. I hope you are happy with the help you have gotten -- and that the

kids are reasonably satisfied too.

Take care, and hang in there.

Best,

Hello again,

I want to thank you all again for your kind words. It makes me feel a lot better

that I am not alone. My family knows of course but it is not the same. And then

again I do not want to complain so much about it to them.

, you write it as it is, why things always seem to come at the same

time, some times it is too much but then again you have to hold on.

We are off to the hospital on sunday the 10th of May because of the long drive.

I will ly down in the car. I will make a list of things I want to ask and hope

to get the awnsers I need. I am seeing one of the nice back surgeons dr Melcher,

we met before. I hope he will be able to give me all the awnsers and tell me if

and when I need the surgery. As I said before, Prof Harms makes all the final

decissions about the surgerys.

I will update after this.

Ps. How is Elaine doing, has anybody heard the last couple of weeks? Elaine, if

you read this please let us know!

groetjes Yolanda
