A nonsteroid treatment

Has anyone had treatment with low dose methotrexate for asthma? I

cannot take prednisone as my body doesn't react properly to it. In

the past I had a syncope and was on more than the maximum oral

dosage, then hospitalized for 1 week on IV steroids. The tapering

was a nightmare. My current allergist/immunologist who diagnosed my

Samters agreed that I should not use steroids. Last Fall he put me

on methotrexate for 6 months and I did much better, asthma-wise. He

told me that there is research going on in England which points to

this as a good treatment for my kind of asthma. I currently have a

stubborn sinus infection (am on my 3rd round of antibiotics) so I

can't go back on it until the infection subsides because it

suppresses the immune system and I'd never get rid of the infection.

The side effects of the methotrexate were tolerable. Unfortunately I

could not give blood while on it, but I did that a few weeks ago so

at least I did what I could. I am fortunate in that I generally have

my sense of smell and the asthma only gets really bad (like it is

now) with infections, some weather conditions and major stress.

Mornings have been scary around here the last few days with peak

flows about 2/3 or less than they should be. He changed my meds some

and this morning was better -- still well-depressed but more

tolerable. I live on an island, which makes treatment even more

hairy in an emergency. Anyway, has anyone tried methotrexate for the

asthma?

I assume you are on an inhaled asthma controller like ADvair. You can also

use atrovent inhaler as well and should have a nebulizer for resue or

emergencies. The doc could still give you IM injections of steroid of things

got really bad. Carol

Yes I am on Advair, Singulair, DuoNeb during a flare (like now) or

MaxAir when I am not in Status Asthmaticus. I am thinking of going

back on the methotrexate once this infection subsides. It seemed to

hold me in good stead while I was on it. I was wondering if anyone

else has done methotrexate and how they felt on it. I don't want to

go near systemic steroids again. My body just does not react

properly with them. Thank you for your response. I agree with

having the nebulizer on hand. Before I had one I was on the

ambulance too many times. Since, I've not been hospitalized with my

asthma at all.
