He was emphatic about not having any form of it in or on the body, which meant nothing with aloe in cosmetics or shampoos! Along with this regimen was the prescription for Guaifenisen/Humabid. The diet and medication together were supposed to break up calcium phosphate deposits in the muscles and body tissue. In a very short time the extreme restriction of this became almost impossible for me to continue with. However, knowing that it was the calcium and phosphorus pathways, I was able to incorporate my own version of mineral balancing and put FM behind me. I don't know if Dr. St. Amand is still using this protocol or not; at the time he was trying to get studies done at U of Oregon, I believe.(Vilik, there's your backyard!) He had a website and many of the other websites and message boards dealing with FM were rife with discussion of this. FWIW, Sharon
Guest guest
Dear Vilik, Salicylates are chemicals which are like aspirin. They are a toxin made by the plant as a natural pesticide. Each person tolerates various salicylate-containing foods in different amounts. Some of the recent studies indicate that salicylate has an effect on PST (Phenol SulfoTransferase), an enzyme needed by the brain and also needed by the gut to metabolize high-phenolic compounds like artificial colors and flavors. PST has been shown to be low for people with ADHD or autism. Salicylate suppresses PST even more, by up to 50%. It is not yet known whether avoiding the salicylate-containing foods for a while causes the available amount of PST to rise. However, the response of many people to an elimination diet makes that theory appear plausible. These foods contain salicylates: · Almonds · Apples · Apricots · Berries (all) · Cherries · Chili powder · Cider & cider vinegar (apples) · Cloves · Coffee · Cucumbers · Currants · Grapes · Nectarines · Oranges · Paprika · Peaches · Peppers (bell & chili) · Pickles · Plums, prunes · Raisins · Tangerines · Tea · Tomatoes · Wine & wine vinegar (grapes) · Oil of wintergreen (methyl salicylate) · Molasses and honey vary widely in salicylate content Best of Health! Guest guest
Saul: Where are you getting your information about salicylates ? What are the recent studies you are talking about ? How are these foods listed below ranked in amount of salicylates ? This is very incomplete information and I would like to know how you jump from " It is not yet known whether avoiding.... to ....the response of many people to an elimination diet makes that theory appear plausible " . Guest guest
Saul, Thank you so much for this information. I am (or was tested to be) very sensitive to phenol, and I avoid artifical colors and flavors. But gee...almonds...who knew? Terrible diet for summer...that's just about all the foods I'm eating! Are blueberries included in the berry group? I'd like to try eliminating these foods...have to wait till all the wonderful produce I just bought this morning at the farmers market is gone. Can you give me more info or direct me a website? If this is a problem for people, how long before they see improvement after they eliminate these foods? Thanks again. ~^^V^^~ At 03:57 PM 7/26/2000 -0700, you wrote: >Dear Vilik, > >Salicylates are chemicals which are like aspirin. They are a toxin made by >the plant as a natural pesticide. Guest guest
Dear Sharon, This information comes from Dr. St. Amand. He carried out the Oregon study, but they had some problems with compliance, and didn't get conclusive results. I would be very interested in hearing about your own version of mineral balancing. Hi Saul, I'm guilty of a slight misnomer; what I actually attempt is " metabolic balancing " a la Kelley, , Rudolph Wiley, Bill Wolcott, and Guy Schenker. But I still look at the CA/P ratio first, and aim for the perfect 10/4.5. after that I want to discover what possible imbalance might be present in the autonomic nervous system, the oxidative system (is that a " system " ?), THEN the electrolytes and last the ph, which should come into balance as a result of balancing the other factors. I'm forever a student! Sharon

Guest guest
> > Shouldnt be a problem . There was some suggestion that they counter acted > sprio but that did not prove out. Hmmm... When I was first reated for colitis many years ago, they gave me 5-Aminosalicylic acid in large doses. While they healed the colon, they made me very ill (felt like what I now know is low K). I was thinking that possilby the cause was that it was essentially potentiating the excess aldo that I already had, which is why I had such an unusual reaction to the drug. Guest guest
salicylates seem to be " everywhere " in nature especially in plant skins and seed coatings. Presumably stawberries and tomatoes are amongst the highest in salicylate content because of all the seeds?
