Dear Collegues:

On behalf of the ad-hoc Human Rights coalition for the

which is to be held at the Church Center, 44th Street

and First Avenue, 2nd floor (across the UN building),

on Wednesday, June 27 between 8:00 am till 1:00 pm,

In light of the increasing interest in the

intersection of human rights and HIV/AIDS, the Ad Hoc

UNGASS Human Rights Working Group is sponsoring a

parallel session. This event will feature a

networking breakfast; an interactive panel discussion;

a SPEAKOUT during which community groups and other

organizations can present what they have been doing in

diverse geographical contexts; and facilitated working

groups in which human rights tools will be shared, and

political strategy will be discussed.

Specific human rights topics to be covered include:

stigma and discrimination; gender; youth; right to

health and access to treatment; and restrictions on

people’s movement. Speakers include Joanne Csete of

Human Rights Watch; Farmer of Harvard University

and Partners in Health; Anand Grover and Vivek Diwan

of the Lawyer’s Collective of India; Harriet Musoke,

Ugandan Women’s Rights Attorney, among others.

Speakout participants include activists, leaders,

service providers and PWAs from around the world.

The gathering is open to all, and is particularly

targeted at those interested in learning more about:

1) the human rights framework and its relevance to the

fight against HIV/AIDS; 2) how to use human rights

advocacy in HIV/AIDS work; and, 3) what organizations

have done to promote a human rights agenda within the

HIV/AIDS context. Our goal is to bring together

individuals and organizations that have been working

on HIV/AIDS from a variety of disciplines, functional

approaches and geographical locations.
