alkalol

ALKALOLOL USER -

Hi! I'm 10 year CFIDS sufferer, One of the products I always have in

medicine cabinet is ALKALOL (brown bottle, saline,essentail oils solutions).

Its is a throw back from both conventional and complementary practicitoners

who swear by its use, as do I. You need to need to learn how to rinse the

nasal passages called " nasal douching " . Sounds yukky, but once you have the

hang of it, its automatic. At the first sign of a cold, allergiees or sinus

involvement., a couple minutes of nasal douching will wash those nasty

buggers (no pun intended) away and the virus will find another place to nest

and i've been able to avoid antibiotics and long drawn out bugs getting a

hold of me for many years. So, there's my 2cents, but worth far more, on

nasal douching. Oh, and you and you can special order it easily from behing

the prescription counter. Many pharmacies have a couple dusty bottles on

hand for odd balls like us PWC's.

My ENT had a new approach to dealing with my latest sinus infection. I'm on

Bactrim and an antibiotic nasal spray, which she wants me to take until surgery.

She also suggested I buy alkalol to put in my nasal rinse--she said it could

help with the congestion. Alkalol advertises itself as being naturally

anti-bacterial and mucus-thinning. Since seeing my ENT, I got a little bit

worse, but today felt great. I rinse with a 1:1 solution of alkalol and saline,

using an baby ear syringe to get the solution as far up my nose as possible.

Those of you with Grossans or Water Piks will have an easier time. It does seem

to loosen up the junk a bit more than saline alone, and while I'm still draining

and stuffy, I feel better. So I don't know if the two-pronged antibiotic

approach is working better, or if the alkalol rinse is just getting the infected

junk out of my sinuses, but I thought you might be interested.

I purchased my bottle at the pharmacy, but supposedly it can be found in most

supermarkets. Good luck, it doesn't hurt--although it does have that cold

menthol feeling--isn't potentially harmful (like H2O2), and it might be helping

flush out the infection.

The one thing I found

with Alkalol is some may be allergic 1½  years ago I started using it and

within a few day I was getting worse but didn’t connect it with the

Alkalol. After about a week I realized it was making me worse. I stopped using

it! Just a heads up, my father in-law swears by it. Everyone should check the ingredients,

or at less realize if they get worse stop immediately. I would be using it if I

did have a bad reaction to it. Good luck all.

What I don't understand is, why do I react so strongly to NSAIDs, but I don't

seem to have a reaction to salicylates in foods, or in this case, in my nasal

rinse? The alkalol really helps me. I tried the sal-free diet for three weeks

after a burst of prednisone, so my polyps were clear when I started, and after

three weeks I could see one growing back already. I know we're all different,

but it makes no sense to me.

Thanks for the info, guys, I wouldn't want to steer people towards something

that would make them worse!

I used Alkalol before

I found out that I had Samter’s. I was surprised by the reaction (back

then). Now it makes since. Thanks for the ingredient “count”, I

never knew that. It’s so great to have people like you!!! Thanks Samter’s

group, you’ve been a great help in my coping with this mess.

Alkalol contains the following :

Ingredients:

Purified Water (USP); Menthol; Eucalyptol; Thymol; Camphor; Benzoin; Oils of

Wintergreen, Spearmint, Pine, and Cinnamon; Potassium Alum; Potassium Chlorate;

Sodium Bicarbonate; Sodium Chloride; Alcohol (2/100 of 1%); Caramel Color.

Wintergreen oil is 98% methyl salicylate ; so, depending on how much they put

into alkalol, and on one's sensitivity, a more or less obvious Samter's

reaction is not excluded :

Good point. There are some in this group who don't find any benefit from the

low-sal diet, so to those people I say: Alkalol is like MAGIC! It doesn't get

rid of polyps, but I've never had a sinus infection get beaten back so fast.
