Guest guest
Our dosage for a 32 pound 22 month old is 2 tsp at onset (usually once it hits 102-103). Repeat one timw if fever reoccurs in 24 hours. Do not repeat if fever reoccurs 2-3 days later - our specualist feels there would be a different cause if it was 3 days later. 99.5 is normal half the time for us. We've had her register 99.2 or 99.3 on a well visit with no concern from the doctor. I'm surprised by febrile seizures at such a low fever and having that be . My understanding was that kids can handle much higher fevers with little concern for seizures. Our daughter hit 108 with no issues - of course we were still a bit scared and treated immediately. Regarding the 5 days od Prednisone, your post is the first I recall stating such a dosage. Hope this helps a bit. Good luck. Ginger . Daughter - le, 22 months ( since 7-12 months) Son - Jay, 5 weeks. ~Ginger Systems Solutions Principal, CAR Financial Services Work: (770) 206-6201 Cell: (770) 823-2871 TREO: (404) 915-5035 Sent from my TREO; thus, please excuse any typos. Our journey so far: - 3 months of Colchicine with no effect at all - 3 months of Cimetidine. I hesitate to say no effect, but " wierd " effects. First, she started having very low grade fevers for a week before the normal episode, then the normal episode would come but be very mild. That happened twice; the third time, the " week before " fever was 11 days, and the normal episode was severe. The Dr. had us stop Cimetidine. - 1 week of Prednisone. This is our latest project. This is where we have questions. Our prednisone dosage is 1 tsp every day for 5 days at onset of fever. On Friday, we noticed her fever coming up (quickly), and it was 4 weeks to the day since the end of her last one. Once it reached 100, we gave her the first prednisone dose. (Sophie has a history of Febrile Seizures, so we can't really wait too long to medicate her). As we guessed from reading this group, the fever quickly subsided. She had a good day, and if she did have a fever it was very very low. Since then, she has had fevers of up to 99.4 or 99.5 or so; the fever isn't completely gone, and today marked the final day of Prednisone doses for this round. My questions are: 1) Does this dosage sound right? The 5 day thing seems odd to me. 2) Does this behavior match anyone else's? I had hoped the fever would disappear after the prednisone, and it mostly has. I'm certainly not complaining; we can handle < 100 fevers just fine, but the fact that something's still going on there worries us, again because of the history of seizures. I'd love to hear some detailed explanations of your experiences with Prednisone. We have been given the green light to remove her tonsils, and we have a consultation in just a few weeks for that, so I'm hopeful that the prednisone is just a short term thing. Guest guest
We also received the same instructions for the dosage of prednisone - give once if we're sure it's " the fever " and then once again 24 hours later if the fever persists. Our specialist also said to call if the fever is not gone after that. Your daughter does not sound like a classic case of , although I'm no expert! Our son has been fevering for a year and does not run low grade temps in between bouts so far. Hope this helps. Good luck with your little one. carol Prednisone Questions Hi folks. Guest guest
Our pred. dose for my 32 pound 4 year old son is 1 tsp. at the start of a fever cycle. I don't know of a 5 day dose. Guest guest
Hi Josh I have also never heard of giving Prednisone for this long and I have only ever heard of kids fevering at much much higher temperatures during episodes. Emma (22 months) gets to 106 or more every time. She is very unwell at these high temperatures but has luckily never had a seizure. As far as I know, Prednisone should be given at the onset of an episode, AFTER any other infection has been excluded by a doctor, and only given once, and sometimes one extra dose 24 hours later although we have not needed to give the second dose so far. Hope this helps Inga Prednisone Questions Hi folks. As some know, my daughter is 2.5 years old, and has been fevering for over a year. Guest guest
We were told to give it for five days as well. The first two days a full dose and the other three a half dose. We weren't comfortable giving it so much so we tried two days one month, three days the next month and one day another month. Each time the fever came back within a week and so we would have to wait out that fever until the next month to give the prednislone. After a few tries we decided this wasn't the best thing for our daughter so we stoped using it. Maybe if we had listened to the doctor it would have worked, who knows. Our daughter just had a T & A on the 25th of May and so if it doesn't work we may be back to trying the Prednislone again. She had a 106.7 fever twice during her last episode before surgery and we just feel like we can't keep fighting it with just Mortin and Tylenol alone. We did also by the way try Cimed. and it had no effect for us. I hope the Prednisone works for you. If you want more info on my daughter feel free to email me anytime. Guest guest
I have only been on 2 bouts of steroids since I was diagnosed in 2005. I'm concerned with side effects, but I've recently taken a 10 day pack and can relate to you saying like your kids feel like they have their mom back. I feel the same way - it's like night and day. Guest guest
The most I've ever done it is 2 weeks, tapering every other day. From: Christy <whitech@...>Subject: Prednisone Questionssamters Date: Saturday, November 28, 2009, 7:58 AM Do you take prednisone? How many milligrams? How many days at a time?I am curious because my ENT put me on a 35 day cycle of it (7 days each of 50mg, 30mg, 20mg, 10mg, and 5mg). I am just finishing it up. After 4 days I regained my sense of smell and have felt great. I am sleeping so much better. My 3 kids (all under 5 years old) feel like they have their mom back. I have experience very little side effects (extra energy, a little random hair growth... but that may be my imagination, increased appetite controlled by strict diet). My allergist seemed concerned about the dose and said that he never puts people on it for more than 10 days. Obviously, I am worried about long term side effects. My OB said that she didn't think my insurance would cover bone density tests (I am 36), but she didn't really look into it. I have been on 4 or 5 rounds this year- most for 10-15 days.Note: My sinuses were so compacted that the polyps were coming out of the bottom of my nose. I did a 14 day round of prednisone in July when I was desinsitized and this is all new, fast growth. My ENT wants to do surgery, but since I am a teacher, I have to wait until Summer. Guest guest
There's also another resource that I have found handy over the years in helping my husband with Samters. My son has ADHD. There is a Dr. Feingold who has linked salicylate sensitivity to ADHD. I actually ordered a book that is a shopping guide from the Feingold organization to help my son and when I found out about the link between Salicylates and Samters, I started using the guide's foods for my husband as well. The nice feature of the shopping guide is that it includes processed foods that are low in salicylates, so you can buy things like Fritos, certain kinds of chips, etc. that don't have high salicylate content. It's a pain to shop with the guide checking every item for the first several times, but it gets easier as you get accustomed to what foods you can buy. The downside of this guide is that it is expensive to join the "Feingold Organization" ($82.50), but if anyone is interested you can contact: shula@... and she will tell you how to join and get the shopping guide.
