I'm tempted, but this is a clean, upstanding group, and I'm sure we

all want to keep it that

way!

See what happens when I go away for a few days? Wow, over 1,000!!!

Just how clean and upstanding can one be when one salivates protectively

over the hair of goat, ? :-) I think we are all loose enough to be

fun, but dazzle with our sobering intelligence, as well. Present company

Thanks to Anya for being the catalyst with the vision and glue that holds

this wonderful group together. Kudos, dear.

i have always heard that when a kid is self abusive you should ignore them and the behavior. You definitely have your hands full. You are a very special person to take on this type of responsibility. She can walk with a walker but doesn't pull herself to a stand. She is nowhere ready for potty-training. She also has sleep issues (free-floating pattern). We've known she has had behavioral issues but until now they have taken a backseat to all of the physical. She is also adopted at the age of 3. There is a heavy component of alcohol, marijuana and cocaine use by her birth mom while pregnant. I need any help I can get but mostly ideas in addressing the self abuse to start with. She doesn't redirect well and we have had to resort to using soft elbow restraints to prevent injury. Now she is almost dependent on the restraints to control herself. Lesley Hicks would be a great support for you -- you adopted her correct? Lesley adopted Devin -- I will send her and email, just to make sure she sees this! , you are doing a great job. Now that she has a diagnosis, you will be guided into the things that are most helpful for behavioral management....Some of the things we have done (I have a three yr old boy) -- we got him into Occupational therapy which you may already have as you say you had physical issues...but try to get someone who is sensory certified, as that was a God-send for us....also some ABA or something that will help you help her to manage behavior. I have ideas, but don't want to post an novel... :) lol...

For now welcome -- email me off group if you like -- Question...is she on any medication to help with her aggression and or anxiety?

I wish we could ignore the hitting. Problem is she causes herself bruising and

bloody lips. It is also the only way she has to tell us when something is wrong

(like she can't breath or is in pain) so we are stuck in a no-win situation. She

is also very creative and if she gets really ticked off she rips her trach out

which causes her to stop breathing. Isn't life fun??????

Can the clef pallete be repaired? I wonder if the head hitting is because she is trying to communicate and can not. Our son would head bang until he started being able to communicate. Most of the time it just stems from frustration. The head banging could also be from abuse when she was in foster care or with her birth parents???

My heart goes out to you. We had a son that needed a g-tube and a trach but was to sick and suffering to much to go through the surgery. I hope there is away to fix the cleft pallete so she can eat and breath on her own and hopefully talk it might relieve some of the behavior issues.

Welcome , I am the grandmother of a 17 year old autistic grandson. My heart goes out to you with the challenges you face, but you must be a special person. I haven't had any experience with those problems. Karac's meltdowns started when he was older. There are a lot of smart, experienced mothers on this list that I am sure will have some ideas for you. I'll put you and Ciara on my prayer list. Love and blessings, Pat K

The cleft can be repaired but there is basically no reason to repair it. She

will never eat because of some facial paralysis which prevents her from

swallowing, protecting her airway or talking. Our best bet for communication is

sign language which we're working on. She actually had good care in foster homes

(never with her birth parents) but did move 5 times in her first 3 years.

I was told I have lumbar SS and my doc recommended PT for 1 month, then if that

does not help a nerve block then if all else fails surgery , does this sound

normal? I have significant pain in my lower region in hips down the back of my

legs to the back of my knees.

Yes it does sound perfectly normal. One should always try conservative measures before opting for any type of spine surgery.PTEpidural injectionsNerve blocksnerve pain meds such as neurontin or lyrica if you are suffering with nerve painAqua therapy, but be sure it is a real aqua therapy with trained physical therapists, no some kind of water therapy at a gym or local Y.All of these may possibly relieve some or all of your pain, but it is important to remember that it is not a cure for spinal stenosis. There is only one cure for spinal stenosis, which is a narrowing of the space that the nerves pass through in the spinal column, through the vertebrae. The only way to cure spinal stenosis is to widen the space that is being narrowed with

osteophytes, which is excess bone growth. On the other hand, strengthening the core muscles with PT and aqua therapy can be enough to heal a disc that is pressing on the nerves because of the narrowing.injections can be enough to aid in shrinking the disc back into place, because the steroids will help to ease inflammation on the nerves and the disc.If these conservative measures provide no relief or not enough relief, then the only real option is to have surgery to relieve the pain.Has you present doctor discussed what type of surgery he/she would do?There are various types of surgery that can be done, and it is important to find out all the information from your present surgery first, then proceed to get several other opinions from other spine surgeons that are not affiliated with your present spine surgeon before going ahead with surgery

of any kind.Good luck with the conservative measures. They did not work for me and in 2006, I opted for surgery to widen the lateral recess of the vertebrae to relieve the pressure on the nerves at the L4/L5.Since then I have had no problems with that vertebrae and have gone on to do all of the things that I did prior to having any type of spine problem.FranFrom: rosied <rosemary512002@...>Subject: newcomerSpinal Stenosis Treatment Date: Thursday, July 8, 2010, 4:17 PM

I had the same pain in the same places. For 10 years drs told me I had spinal

stenosis or and arthriiis. After two visits to a physical Therapist I don't have

any pain.

HI Bob and welcome.Yes what you where told is very normal. Spine surgery is always the last choice to make and one should always try conservative measures first.Very often, PT will help. It strengthens the core muscles which support your spine and with that support you will have better ability to stand straight and move correctly, as well as learn to move correctly and correct your posture etc.If PT doesn't provide enough or any or long term relief, then the next step is steroid injections and see if that will help decrease the pain and get you back to functioning without pain.Only if conservative measures don't help should you consider any type of spine surgery. At that point, you then want to get several other opinions

before deciding on surgery, what type of surgery and if surgery is the right choice for you.Good luck and if you have more questions just ask away.FranFrom: rfayhallock <rfayhallock@...>Subject: Re: newcomerSpinal Stenosis Treatment Date: Friday, December 3, 2010, 5:26 PM
