Guest guest
I have been to the emergency room 3 times for reactions to NSAID drugs. The last time being after I took Aleve (naproxen) and was given the Samters diagnosis. Do any of you wear a medical ID bracelet or necklace? I worry that if I was in a car accident or otherwise unconscious, I would be given anti-inflammatory drugs that would cause severe breathing difficulties. Thoughts? Guest guest
Christy, I think "medical bracelets" has been discussed here before and I seem to remember that some with severe asthma reactions to NSAIDS do where them. Hopefully someone who wears one will respond. I have, likewise, thought about wearing a bracelet because now that I am desensitized to aspirin, I take a high dosage of aspirin daily. My doctor has informed me that whether you are on 81mg or 1300mg of aspirin a day, the bleeding issue is the same. I too worry that if I were to be in a car accident, that paramedics would need to know that I bleed more because of daily aspirin intake. I think wearing a bracelet indicating an aspirin allergy would be important if not desensitized. Guest guest
I’ve worn one for years and believe me they’re very worthwhile. Some years ago I was in a car accident and was unconscious but the ambulance people saw my bracelet and thanks to that I wasn’t given a particular medication. Another thing I’ve done is to make up a little ‘card’ the same size as a credit card and have it labeled ‘Emergencies’ on it so it can be easily seen in my wallet. On that is listed all my details, allergies, next of kin, blood group, medical insurance, etc. In large red letters I have ‘asthmatic – allergic to aspirin’ on it. I showed it to my doctor and he thought it an excellent idea. My GP said one of the first thing the paramedics or doctors do if you’re unconscious is to go through your wallet to check for I.D. and this stands out really well. If you’re in a private health fund, (in Australia) they refund some of the purchase price and of course the GP visit as they need to complete the forms. Guest guest
I used to have one of these types with the paper inside but was advised by my GP to get the other style http://911medalert.com/catalog.asp?action=showcat & id=238. It has carved into it that I’m asthmatic and allergic to aspirin and a free phone number so that whoever is reading it (whether it be paramedics or GP) can contact them as they have a 24/7 service. The records kept at that end of it have all previous medical history including operations which is far more detailed than just the ‘paper style’ one. Guest guest
I HIGHLY recommend a bracelet. My first aphalactic shock was in a hospital after an industrial accident. Even though I told the ambulance driver and the intake nurse I was allergic to aspirin, another nurse, obviously unaware, administered Toredol to me for pain. I was unconscience with 2 minutes. Needless to say, the hospital took VERY good care of me for the next 3 days! From: whitech@... <whitech@...>Subject: Medical IDsamters Date: Sunday, January 4, 2009, 11:59 AMI have been to the emergency room 3 times for reactions to NSAID drugs. Guest guest
I just bought something similar called RoadID for when I'm out running and at the gym. I should carry it with me more though. If anyone wants to check them out their web address is:www.RoadID.comFor my second line of info instead of what they suggested putting I put 'NSAID Allergy' so it's on the front of the bracelet and will be seen quickly. Guest guest
After some internet searches, I found some cute, fashionable bracelets at this site... http://www.creativemedicalid.com They have lots of styles that don't scream MEDICAL. Plus, you can print a free medical ID card to keep in your wallet, even if you don't order anything! Guest guest
I started wearing a Medic Alert bracelet after I went to the hospital for an issue unrelated to Samters. However, while I was there they treated me differently for certain things because I have asthma so it occured to me this could be useful info for docs to know if I was ever in an accident. I am also allergic to quinolone antibiotics in addition to aspirin so both are listed on my bracelet. It also gives me peace of mind to know if something happens someone can call the number on the bracelet and get the contact info for my husband, mother, father and anyone else I list (I think I can list up to 5 contacts). Medic Alert actually advertises that you can simply use their bracelets as a form of ID, esp. for children or eldery who may have trouble remembering contact info. I can also store my current medications in the file. For me the bracelet is unobtrusive as I wear several others all the time anda watch so I don't even think most people notice it. What's funny is another bracelet I wear people think is a medic alert bracelet because it has a heart dangling from it! The Medic Alert yearly membership isn't very expensive either and certainly worth the peace of mind! K. Guest guest
I don't wear medical jewelry, but I do have an engraved white tag on my key ring that says " allergic to aspirin and NSAIDS.
