As I remember, my (self-administered) experience is that, while on

prednisone, I did not have any reaction to aspirin. ie., I APPEARED to be

desensitiezed, but after stopping prednisone, I was again intolerant to

aspirin.

My notes on this are not definitive, and others may have more clinical specs

on this,

but,

in general, I would NOT be on predisone during desensitization because it

masks the results of the process, specifically, you may not actually

experience an explicit threshhold reaction which is the key marker of the

process.

If you still have polyps after desensitization, attack them with irrigation

and steroidal sprays.

How did you find out that you aspirin intolerence was back? Did you take the

daily dose and react? Was it a gradual thing or did you have a severe reaction?

What do you think about taking prednisone before but not during? Polyps will

have shrunk but after-affect may still mask reaction.

I agree with Ken. No steroids before or during desensitization. It will "mask" your reactions. My first desens was with Dr. son at Scripps and that was one of the "rules". You had to be off steroids. He was doing a study back then and did not want anything to skew his findings.

Hi Elayne,

First of all good luck!

I took a dose of steroids to reduce the big reaction I had to my initial dose of aspirin, and then for about 3 days had a small dose just to help reduce symptoms from the first does (81mg/day).

Hi Rob,

While I understand that your MD was doing research and therefore wanted to be

sure that the steroids would affect the outcome,

I am concerned with having the best possible " starting point " and the steroids

would shrink the polyps to make that happen.

I was full of polyps when I underwent aspirin desensitization. I did take pred.

for about a week beforehand. While the desense was considered successful (I now

take 1300mg a day), I have not noticed any benefit from taking aspirin. My

polyps still grow at a remarkable rate and I have no sense of smell. I am going

to have surgery on May 7 to clean me out. My ENT is going to do the surgery

while I reduce my aspirin dose (thanks to the members of this group!).

Hopefully, after I am all cleaned out, the aspirin will show a benefit.
