Guest guest
Hi, I have been on and off Singulair for about 2 1/2 years now. I just found out that I have a lesion on my liver not sure whether its related to the drug or not. I have to go soon to have an MRI of my liver. I thought I saw something about Liver side effects with this drug. Did anyone else see that? I also read the side effects of children and that scares me a lot! I worked for Novartis Pharmaceuticals in Clinical Research and Development and the things these Companies don't tell you about the drugs are really scary! Guest guest
I don't know how to tell what is working. I am and I assume most of us are on so much stuff, Advair, singulair, irrigation, nebulizers, diets, nasal sprays, aspirin....we'd have to conduct our own friggin' study, everyone going off of each drug one at a time and even then, we'd probably never know what drug is doing what. Which i'm sure is fine with the ENT's and the pharmaceutical companies. clare_claz <clare_ff@...> wrote: and Bruce, thank you both for your replies. Guest guest
Well said!! I take Singulair, Zyrtec, Advair, FLonase and aspirin as well as allergy shots. I've been afraid to reduce some of them, especially Singulair, even though I don't really know if they are working. Mainly due to so many drugs, my wife and I met our annual high deductible ($4500)for our HSA in June!! Thank goodness the prescriptions are paid 100% after the deductible is met. Ken, I'm considering stopping allergy shots also. Next week I'm going to be re-tested for the first time in 6 years to see if my allergies are the same. One option is to just stop. I think they have really helped me so far, but I may no longer need boosters/maintenance. My allergist told me recently that deaths have occurred from allergy shot reactions involving people on Beta Blockers (for high blood pressure) even though they are on maintenance doses. I just had to change high blood pressure medicine in order to stay on shots. Jim (TX) --- Toni Earle <toniearle2003@...> wrote: > I don't know how to tell what is working. Guest guest
I haven't had a single side effect from Singulair ever, and I've been taking it for years at three times the normal dosage. All medications that do any bit of good have many side effects. Honestly I think Singulair is one of the least harmful (for most people). There are some who may not agree, but that is my experience. Guest guest
I used singulair for several years. I didn't really seem to get any benefit from it. I did start to suffer a bad reaction to it though. My hands and fingers started to itch whenever I took it. Go figure.
Guest guest
Is anyone taking zyflo now that it is back on the market? My Allergy doctor has me on it and I think it really makes a difference in my nasal symptoms as well as my asthma. Guest guest
I was on it for about thirty days and developed a rash, too bad cause it seemed to help me when I was on it. For now Zyflo has been my savior. I can breathe, my sense of smell is about 50%, I am not constantly blowing my nose. The bad thing about Zyflo is it is not timed release so you have to take several during the day, also you have to get your liver enzymes tested a few times a year. I have been on the drug for several years and no problems for me (yet)..... Guest guest
I've been back on Zyflo for about 3 months, and it seems to really make a difference in all of my symptoms, especially the asthma. Singulair just doesn't do anything noticeable for me, but Zyflo does. My allergist explains that there are several chemical pathways by which our symptoms are triggered by our immune system, and Zyflo affects far more of these than Singulair (layman's translation of her technical description). She always has me do liver enzyme testing every few months, but no problems so far. I think the stuff is amazing! > >> > > >> > Great reply , on Singulair side effects. I would ditto > >> that. Guest guest
I'm not sure what you mean by the side effects " of children. " Did you mean the side effects " on children? " The dosage for children is less than in adults. As you know, the drug companies tell you what they are required to tell you by the FDA and it is in the package insert for the drug. There may be egregious cases where the drug company lies to the FDA, but many times I think the FDA and other causes share the blame for not informing the public. But also many Americans, in fact, probably most Americans do not educate themselves and read the package inserts. Admittedly, they are confusing and can be scary and misleading. It seems to me from reading the package insert of Singulair that is has not been very well studied in children. Liver enzymes were VERY SLIGHTLY elevated over placebo in the adults that took Singulair. I do not know anything about there being liver lesions from Singulair. As you probably know, many drugs are metabolized by the liver, and the more drugs you take, the more potential complications with drugs being toxic to the liver and also interacting with each other if they are metabolized through the same liver enzyme pathway. This is from the package insert of Singulair: <<Rare cases of cholestatic hepatitis, hepatocellular liver-injury, and mixed-pattern liver injury have been reported in patients treated with SINGULAIR. Most of these occurred in combination with other confounding factors, such as use of other medications, or when SINGULAIR was administered to patients who had underlying potential for liver disease such as alcohol use or other forms of hepatitis> So maybe everyone should be aware of that who is on Singulair anyway. I hope everything turns out okay with further evaluation of your ilver. Lori in NY

Guest guest
Thanks for that little tid bit of info on leukotriene inhibitor meds. Sounds a bit scary. Just today my "new" ENT prescribed Singulair (10mg) for me to take. He also described why we get polyps in a way that I never thought of. Our bodies don't like the allergens or irritants so we grow the polyps to block them from getting in. Interesting! Guest guest
I did read that depression and mood changes was one of the side effects listed for Singulair. Thankfully that has never been a problem for me, other than living with discouragement over my Samters symptoms. But I do agree that its never really had a positive effect on my symptoms, so for now, I'm happy to be on one less medicine!JaneFrom: Uri <urania51@...>Subject: Re: Singulair side effectssamters Date: Sunday, January 9, 2011, 7:21 AM I stopped taking Singulair because it caused depression in my case. At first I thought my extremely dark feelings were due to my condition until I realized the onset of those feelings had coincided with my new prescription for Singulair. So I investigated online and was shocked by the number of people with similar side effects. About two weeks after stopping Singulair I was back to normal, and by the way, it made no difference in my symptoms. Uri
Guest guest
Jane, it could be 100% down to steroid shots - steroids are magical in their ability to reduce our symptoms. Steroids work a treat for me in reducing my symptoms. I am desensitized to aspirin, but I have been suffering with chronic sinus infections for the last 2 years. I am an elementary school teacher and have seriously been considering leaving the work I love for fear I am in a sick building. Two weeks before Christmas I received an info. pamphlet in the mail regarding Singulair and its side effects. (I have been taking Singulair nightly for the last 5 years to help control polyp growth.) The side effects were many. But two that stood out for me were: Chronic runny nose and chronic sinus infections. I couldn't help but wonder if I suffered from these side effects because I literally blow my nose nonstop. So, I took the info. to my ENT and we agreed that I would stop the Singulair to see if my symptoms improved. Now, he also gave me steroid shots in my turbinates because I was so infected and put me on antibiotic nasal sprays. The miracle is that my nose stopped running within days and I no longer have a sinus infection. This is after a chronic 2-year infection that I couldn't get cleared up!Just wanted to share this in case anyone else is suffering with these possible side effects. If anyone wants me to type out the list of side effects from the pamphlet I was given, I will. I am wondering if a class action suit has been started and that's why I received this information.Jane
Guest guest
Interesting. My doctor was not willing to put me back on Prednisone, so he gave me shots of Kenelog steroid right into my turbinates because they were so infected and swollen. Two days later I felt like a new person! I then started three antibiotic sprays, one being Gentymycin, which has worked wonders. I continue to use this three times a day. My ENT knows that I want to try and continue teaching, but have been so worried about working in school buildings. We are going to possibly try me on the antibiotic nebulizer soon. He said this is something I could use daily to try and keep my sinuses from getting the chronic infections. I am willing to try anything at this point.Jane From: Bannister <beckyb256@...>Subject: Re: Singulair side effectssamters Date: Sunday, January 9, 2011, 2:28 AM Hi Jane, I'm very glad to hear that you are feeling much better at the moment, but i really can't help thinking it's due to the steroid shots and antibiotics, mostly?
