Patti,

Can you tell me more about the reactions to Ginseng.

Thanks,

Many PWCs, especially those with low cell-mediated

immunity have a very difficult time with Ginseng.

Hi, ,

My own experience is that Siberian ginseng works for me, while the others do

not. Early on before I noticed the difference I tried a combo ginseng; went

immediately into a downhill slide, that only turned around when I got back

on Siberian. Similar experience at another time I went off the Siberian

also.

I use capsules of powdered root - I have tried extracts that did not work

(but in fairness should say that those were from cheap manufacturers so it

may not be a problem with extracts per se). Also sbe careful about dosages -

there are capsules ranging from 100mg up to 800 mg.

FWIW for comparison, my cortisol levels are within normal; but I am on DHEA

& testosterone. I started the S.ginseng originally for immune dysfunction,

which it is supposed to improve.

Jerry

There are several types of ginseng. I'd use them if I had cancer.

Here's the info I've compiled:

ginseng (true/Chinese/Asian/Korean/Oriental/panax/red, reishi, &

American)-- ginseng's especially effective if taken w/astragalus;

" American ginseng contains ginsenosides and polysaccharide that

inhibit Ehrlich's ascites carcinoma.sarcoma-180 and adenocarcima-755 " ;

ginseng's effective (in animals) for melanoma, ascites hepatoma,

breast & hepatocellular cancer (also inhibits lung metastases), &

ovarian cancer (including cystadenocarcinoma); supports immune system;

inhibits metastases; very yang; avoid caffeine while using it; may be

best to take in powder or extract form; re: prostate cancer, it

elevates (the bioavailability of) testosterone (undesirable) and

shrinks prostate; Korean ginseng enhances effects of radiation; stop

taking it at least 1 wk before surgery. " SHOULD NOT BE USED BY THOSE

WITH HYPOGLYCEMIA, HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE, OR HEART DISORDERS. " Use a top

brand (most are ineffective). For more info, www.hoxsey.tripod.com

Careseng--enhanced ginseng-derived product and is much more expensive

than ginseng. For info, www.pegasuspharm.com

eleuthero/eleutherococcus (formerly called Siberian

ginseng)-adaptogen; enhances immunity; effective w/cervical, B-cell

lymphoma, & other viral-based cancers; enhance effects of radiation;

was the 2nd most commonly used herb by the Eclectics for cancer; use a

good brand; for info, www.commonweal.org/herbs.html

An excellent Essiac-type product that contains gingseng is

CAN-SSIAC--contains sheep sorrel, burdock, red clover, American panax

ginseng, Pau d'Arco, turkey/Indian rhubarb root, and slippery elm

bark; effective w/colon and other cancers; may reduce side effects of

chemo. 1 of the best cancer-healing herbal combinations I know of. For

Now I see it is advised not to take it with aspirin. Too bad.On Jun 6, 2011, at 12:24 AM, asfy wrote:

Jane,It's just that I have seen this advice repeatedly and I believe it is traditional advice. I attribute it to the fact that ginseng is an immunomodulator and that a common recommendation with immunomodulators is to take "pauses", presumably to prevent the immune system from getting too much accustomed to them and to preserve their efficacy.Also be aware that is it is not recommended to take ginseng along with anticoagulants, probably because ginseng already has anticoagulant effects.For complete information including safety recommendations, read the University of land's monography on asian ginseng.http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/asian-ginseng-000249.htmhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ginseng--- In samters , Jane Marino <janesmarino@...> wrote:>> Thank you. I really appreciate this info. Can you tell me why a "pause" is needed in between the 3-week trials?> Jane> > > > From: asfy asfyso@...> Subject: Re: Kephir> samters > Date: Sunday, June 5, 2011, 9:38 AM> > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >  > > > > > > > > > > Ginseng can be found at a number of stores, but there is a difference between American Ginseng and Korean Ginseng (Panax Ginseng), with Korean Ginseng being the most studied and recommended. Then, there are two types of Korean Ginseng : white and red. The white one is the standard grade, while the red one is aged 5-6 years, has been processed, and is traditionally much more valued because it is richer in active elements. The usual advice with ginseng is to begin with a 3-week cure of a gram every morning before breakfast, either pure or in a drink, and then have at least a 3-week pause before considering another try. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > From: asfy <asfyso@>> > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Subject: Kephir> > > > > > > > > > > > > > > samters > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Date: Saturday, June 4, 2011, 7:45 AM> > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > ÃÆ'‚ > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Anaerobe.ÃÆ'‚ 2011 May 23. [Epub ahead of print]In vitro assay of the antimicrobial activity of kephir against bacterial and fungal strains.Chifiriuc MC,ÃÆ'‚ Cioaca AB,ÃÆ'‚ Lazar V.SourceUniversity of Bucharest, Faculty of Biology, Microbiology Immunology Department, Ale. Portocalelor 1-3, 60101 Bucharest, Romania.AbstractKephir is a fermented carbonated refreshing milk, with a slightly acidic aromatic taste and creamy foam composition which contains lactobacilli, leuconostocci, acetic acid bacteria, lactostreptococci and yeasts. Recent studies have demonstrated its antibacterial, immunostimulating, antitumoral and cholesterol-lowering activities.PURPOSE:The purpose of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial activity of kephir against Bacillus subtilis spp. spizizenii ATCC 6633, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212, Escherichia coli ATCC 8739, Salmonella> enteritidis ATCC 13076, Pseudomonas> > > aeruginosa ATCC 9027> > > > > > > and> > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Candida albicans ATCC 10231. The kephir fermented for 24ÃÆ'‚ h and 48ÃÆ'‚ h, as well and after 7 days preservation at 4-8ÃÆ'‚ ÃÆ'‚°C was tested by inÃÆ'‚ vitro disk diffusion method. The intensity of the antimicrobial activity was interpreted by comparison with two antibiotics, i.e. ampicillin and neomycin.RESULTS:The antimicrobial activity of 24ÃÆ'‚ h as well as 48 fermented kephir, fresh or after 7 days preservation at 4-8ÃÆ'‚ ÃÆ'‚°C was similar and observed against B.ÃÆ'‚ subtilis, S.ÃÆ'‚ aureus, E.ÃÆ'‚ coli, E. faecalis and S.ÃÆ'‚ enteritidis. For E.ÃÆ'‚ coli, E. faecalis and S.ÃÆ'‚ enteritidis the antimicrobial activity was superior to both tested antibiotics and for B.ÃÆ'‚ subtilis and S.ÃÆ'‚ aureus to one> antibiotic. The tested products exhibited no activity against P.ÃÆ'‚ aeruginosa and C.ÃÆ'‚ albicans.CONCLUSION:Kephir is exhibiting large spectrum and strong> > > antibacterial activity probably due to the complex viable probiotic strains association producing> > > > > > > antimicrobial substances.> > > > > > > > > > > > > > >> > > > > > >> > >>
