My doc said he would prescribe prednisone for exactly that purpose (so I can enjoy the holiday scents and foods), but then we discovered how remarkably injected steroids (Kenalog) work for me. Now I just time my Kenalog injections so they cover the holiday periods. I've noticed no ill effects from the injections, and one injection will restore my sense of smell for months (as long as nine months).
