Yeah, I agree. Perhaps a more effective approach would be " Every 20 minutes a

child is

diagnosed with Mercury Poisoning " or, " every 20 minutes a child is diagnosed

with autism,

shortly thereafter it is recognized as mercury poisoning " . Maybe the dramatic,

truthful,

cold slap in the face would bring about more meaningful awareness.

Why not sound a deaf-producing siren every 20 minutes.

I think a billboard with a rolling total at a few major cities would

be good, although I LOVE the siren idea!

Seriously you guys, on one main road here there are 3 billboards from

my house to the highway. Imagine Joe blow who drives to work that way

everyday. Do you think he's shocked or concerned?

He has just assimilated that fact into his brain.

" a child is diagnosed with autism every 20 minutes'...hmmmmm big deal.

What good is " awareness " anyway if there is no cure or treatment (per

AS)? What do you do with your new awareness? Donate money to AS so

they can make more people aware?

Here is my analogy to awareness and early detection of autism.

If you had a street where children were running into traffic and being

killed or maimed at an alarming rate, would you invest in ambulances to

scrape their mangled bodies off the street or in a fence to keep them

from getting into the street from the start?

Kim,

Oh, no... not a fence... A fence would trap the kids in the yard.

What would happen to the 1 in 100,000 kid who might either die or be

harmed by a killer bee who happened to sting the kid in the yard

when the kid couldn't run away because of the fence. Shame on you

for not taking that kid into consideration. Stop being so selfish,

you are a dangerous person. :)

The people so loudly promoting awareness, not necessarily a bad thing,

have had almost nothing to do with the ambulances, and are not talking

much about that. They are merely saying, look! children are being

killed and maimed in the street, and pretty much stop there, leaving

the children in the street to suffer their fate.

The word you are thinking of is " doublespeak " . It means 180 degree

spin by governments. For example, " We are establishing the peace "

really means " we are going to war " . The sign over a Nazi

Concentration Camp read in German " Work will set you free " . What it

actually meant was " We will work you to death " .

So,what is Autsim Speaks " doublespeak " with all their awareness

billboards? There are so many in my community- I think the average

man (or woman) really is ok with autism being diagnosed every twenty

mintues. You drive down Rt. 46 in my town you see three of those

billboards telling you the same thing, you think -so what.

How about a sign that says

“Each person with autism costs taxpayers 20 million dollars”

Get autism?

Except the backlash with bring out the NIMBY advocates and maybe even

eugenicists disguised as geneticists. When resources are scarce the

weak will be prey.

I agree, and doing more of the math for them would help even more.

Add a line like " Funding Diagnosis and effective treatment of autism

can save taxpayers an average of $19.5M per child (or whatever it is) "

Also, thank you for writing an honest number--the $20M.

I'm so sick of the $2 million number I always hear which is utter

crap. Just an average person's lost lifetime salary would exceed

that, not to mention care and the loss of income to the family, and

all kinds of incidentals.

So many people just don't care from a humanitarian perspective...but

the money gets their attention. Sad, but true.

Well, I wasn’t sure of the number but Bob or Lifespire gave some numbers at the hearing last week.

Was it $20 million Bob?

That would be the 180 spin Lenny was referring to.

What about that makes you a lunatic? Maybe it wreaks of fringe, but it

doesn't necessarily make you a lunatic.

Hi ,

Our numbers based on actual experience: approximately $17million for an

individual with high need and approximately $12million for a person

with lower level of need.

THis is for a disabled adult from age 23-66. The number is for NYC so

there is a factor for high real estate costs in NYC, but the difference

is not as high as you might think.

Also, this builds in a 3% trend increase, which is consistent with

government cost increase factors used by the govt in projecting

expenses and also our experience.

These numbers include no costs to age 23 and no lost earnings and

similar items.

Hi ,

We have alot of billboards here, too. But, I don't think many people dismiss it

at all. Just a

year ago, when I would quote the numbers to people, they were surprised. Now,

more

people know. And they are beginning to ask more questions about why that it is.

I think that every young couple who is planning to have children, every pregnant

mother

and the father, and grandparents are now beginning to take notice.

People have all sorts of tests during pregnancy for things like down syndrome

and other

trisomy syndromes (18 and 13, etc.) and if they are told they have a 1 in 500

chance of

having a child with one of these trisomy disorders, they are concerned. But,

let's face it,

the concern is far higher for someone who is older. The young worry less.

To know that autism strikes 1 in 150 no matter what your age is striking. I

think maybe

the only ones who are more desensitized to the issue is people who are already

there.
