The common theme I am picking up is that when people take prednisone more

often than not their smell returns. Would it be appropriate for me to say

that????

I don¹t know a great deal about prednisone, but when you take it, it does

effect your body doesn¹t it. I know that most drugs have some side effects,

but using prednisone long term is not recommended??? Can anyone comment on

this please?

Also, is it advisable not to take prednisone whilst trying to conceive a

baby, being pregnant or whilst breastfeeding?

I'm with ya, Karl. I had a love of scents (even " dirty " ones) long prior to

becoming anosmic (following sinus surgery) in early 2002 and that passion

for fragrance has only deepened as a result of this condition. When, after

starting a course of prednisone early last month, I first was able to smell

the contents of a jar of peanut butter, I nearly cried. I'm trying to hold

onto my sense of smell now with low doses of prednisone and revelling in

every scent I encounter, from chocolate cake to sweaty socks!

I just hope that my dosage is such that these things won't happen,.

I never take more than 25mg/day, and decrease to zero over 2 to 3 weeks.

I do remember when I took it for a longer periord, when I was dealing with

Pleurisy, my appetite was amazing, and I did have swelling in joints.

Wow! Thanks for that site, Ken. Yes, prednisone has many problems, but I have

found that when I

get a sinus infection, antibiotics are essentially worthless without some

prednisone. Fortunately,

since going on aspirin, I only seem to need a 4mg dosepak as opposed to much

higher/longer doses

before.

Looks like and I touched off a good discussion regarding the value of

smell and taste. It

appears that most of us really miss it when its gone. I remember a few years ago

when my dr.

refused to give me prednisone due to my low bone density rating. It about drove

me crazy not being

able to taste for about a year. I really craved my prednisone fix and couldn't

get it. I would

dream about the time 10-15 years ago when I got my smell back while driving back

from the doctor's

office after he gave me a prednisone shot. That was fast! Of course after the

polyps got bigger,

it took a lot longer to work.

Wow, that is depressing....makes me not feel so bad about not being able to smell after reading some of those posts. Luckily I average taking the pred pak about twice a year. I even hate taking it that much. But it sure is nice smelling a couple of months out of the year....Sounds like alot of the people in our group take pred quite a bit during the year.
