US helps for combating AIDS in India

The Times of India 25-07-2001, New Delhi.

WASHINGTON: US Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy has pledged

his full support to the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin

(AAPI), a powerful body of Indian American doctors, to combat AIDS in India.

was apparently so impressed with AAPI's commitment to the cause that he

said he would like Health and Human Services (HHS) to partner this effort.

The AAPI Task Force on AIDS-established during the tenure of the immediate past

president Dayan Naik, has held special meetings with some top AIDS researchers

at the s Hopkins University in Baltimore, land, and US lawmakers,

particularly Rep Jim McDermott, to involve the US government to help in this

effort.

McDermott's support had been invaluable, as this lawmaker, who is the Democratic

co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans and is a

physician by training, has visited India over 15 times. His initial visits were

to red light districts in Mumbai and Kolkota to study incidence of AIDS there.
