baby bottle nipples

Here's a fun tip my new allergist suggested - to modify an ashthma

inhaler for use as a nasal inhaler, take a baby bottle nipple (Nuk

brand seems to be best shape), cover over the mouth end of inhaler

with nipple, cut off tip of nipple, and there you go..

I've been using this technique for several months now with good

success. Originally using Qvar, now Flovent (45 mg./spray), one

spray per nostril 2X/day. Flovent is the same steroid as Flonase.

The nice thing about this system is you can spray in the inverted

or 'mecca' position with no problem. The force of the spray really

gets the meds way up there.

Actually, I'm kinda surprised that more Samterites/anosmics don't

use this technique. You don't see many posts about it.

Regards to all,

My ENT suggested this as well, and I have found it works beautifully to get the medicine back into the sinuses rather than just inside your nose. I have to be careful with nasal sprays because after all these years, I now have a perforation in my septum. I'm hoping it doesn't get any bigger. (Anyone else have this? I think its rare).

Lilah, I don't have a perforation, but I do have an ulceration in my

septum. I would think that one could lead to the other, but I don't

know that for sure.

That's an interesting point to consider. I know the steroid is

sprayed at a much greater force using an asthma inhaler nasally with

a baby bottle nipple than with a standard spray bottle. I'm not sure

if the genesis of a septal perforation or ulceration would be the

mechanical irritation from the force of the spray or from the meds

itself; or perhaps even a combination.

So far I haven't experienced any adverse effects using this

technique besides a mild transient burn just after the spray; maybe

a few seconds.

Another tip my allergist gave me is to be sure to close your other

nostril and mouth when spraying or some of the meds will exit these

orfices. Just to be safe I also keep my eyes closed and gargle and

rinse my mouth after each treatment.
