When you irrigate, make sure to keep your mouth open so that there is

not high pressure in your nostril, you will get fluid draining into

your pharynx, so lean forward so that you don't aspirate. Also do not

close your other nostril- though it may be helpful when you are not

subject to ear infections, it will aggravate them if you are.

I actually

find I have more issues with my ears using the Neilmed bottle vs the WaterPik.

I also have to be very, very careful blowing my nose afterwards or my ears

hurt. Have you tried irrigating and then not blowing your nose for 5-10 mins

or only blowing it very gently? Though it sounds like if you are already prone

to ear infections irrigating might not be so good for that…

When I do I get ear

infections. Not that I don't get them anyway, but

they come on faster and more ferocious when I irrigate.

I've tried gentle methods like the netti pot. I tried the Neil Med

machine from grossan.

It really ticks me off. I paid over $100. for the pulmicort. I used

it every day for a week and then had an ear infection. Cleared that

up used it again got another ear infection.

I'm so tired of all of this.

I irrigate daily and absolutely have too in order to breather. However, I too, have to be very careful of my left ear as it easily becomes irritated and/or infected from irrigating. I'll tell you what I now do. I use the Neilmed bottle. I bend my head over the sink and tilt it slightly to the right. That way, water still goes into my left side but does not go into the ear canal. Its hard to explain, I just know how far to tilt to the right in order to move water through the left side but not into the ear canal. Have you had your ears checked? Is your Eustachian tube open into the sinuses? You may want your ENT to look at that. Perhaps that needs to be corrected as with Samters, you need to be able to irrigate. I've had it checked. At one point I even had a tube placed. The ENT

thought it would help. It didn't really. I still got 2 infections in

the ear, the second one was so bad it pushed the tube out. Now I have

a permanent hole from so many ruptures.

I always leave my mouth open when irrigating. As to closing the other

nostril, why would I do that? Isn't the point to have the solution go

through your sinuses and out the other side?

I can't blow my nose. I haven't been able to blow my nose in 10 years.

Unless I'm on prednisone.

I've tried 4 different methods in the hopes of finding 1 that worked

without recurrent infections. I had really high hopes of the

pulmicort. I'm miserable and I can't do anything about it.

I have the same sort of problems. I had to blow my nose this morning because I was so stuffed up. I got so dizzy I felt like I was going to fall over. It does not happen every time but I never know when it will. The irrigation thing seems to work til I end up with a terrible sinus infection shortly thereafter. I mean I feel clearer for a bit. And the stuff that comes out of my nose is amazing but then I end up worse. I have some hearing loss in my right ear that I have really just noticed as being worse the last couple of years. It seems like no matter what I do it is a never ending cycle.

I can sympatize with this poster.Though, I don't get ear infections I too have issues when irrigatingwith my Neli Med. I can "feel" my ears getting full of water whenusing the device. Thus, I only irrigate on an as needed basis. I amoverly concerned about further damaging myself and loosing my hearing. One thing that I've often noticed as well is when blowing my nose, myright ear clogs, I get really bad vertigo, and my body teperatureraises. This can go on for several minutes until somethingde-pressurizes and my ear makes a "fizzle" sound and I am ok!

I am right there with you both. I am often simply amazed at what comes out of my sinuses. I do my best to irrigate but I have to lay off for a few days when my ears start to bother me. I finally had a formal audiology test this year as I knew I had major hearing loss. As a teacher, this is a real problem. My ENTs office did the test and let me know that my ear drums are actually pulled inside out! Probably from 20 years of blowing my nose and pressure on the Eustachian tubes from polyps. He feels that if I can every fully get control of this sinus mess the ear drums may self-correct. In the meantime, I am not a candidate for hearing aids. Pretty discouraging. Jane brought up a really good point. We all have a disease that is relatively rare. My Primary, my pulmonologist and my ENT each only have one Samter's patient. It is me of course. I have also never met a Samter's patient.

Sometimes I wonder how long we all will live. When first diagnosed at age 47 my Doctors told me I wold never see 60. Now I am 56 and they say I may see 70. Some days I wonder. I remain positive, keep a smile and deal with the issues many of you deal with.

The questions to all of you are:

1. Any Samters patients from Maine.

2. Any of you serious mountain climbers? I am and hope to do Kiliminjaro in Sept but am worried with my problem yes.

3. Anyone from the San Diego area. I am visiting there in July.

4. Any finally the big one, what are our lifespans...any ideas??

Would be nice to meet a real live person with my issues.

Tom that’s rather taken the wind out of my

sails.  I had no idea it had any bearing on life expectancy and none of my

doctors, ENT or allergist have ever mentioned it.

I would suggest that if you feel fit

enough to do Kiliminjaro then go for it.  I find that my breathing has become

more difficult over the past six months though without the wheezing that

generally goes with the asthma and yes, it does worry me. I mentioned it to my

doctor and all he did was put me on anti depressants because I have quite a bit

of stress in my life.

You so just made me laugh. : ) I know I would have been tempted to choke someone. LOL People find out I have had 8 sinus surgeries and ask me why they can't fix what is wrong with me. Like OMG why didn't the surgery help. I always have tissues in my pockets and purses. People that don't really know me well make comments like "are you sick again?". I try to explain about the Samters and get blank looks. I get tired of trying to make people understand.

If I could get them to think I had the plague, at least they'd leave me alone. I get the glassy stare for a minute, then they excuse themselves and walk away, only to return the next day to begin the cycle anew. I might try your plague suggestion ;) Re: I can't irrigate

Just tell them with a very serious look on

your face that you’re extremely contagious with a very rare type of plague and

they’re no known cure which really isn’t all that far from the truth. Perhaps

save a polyp from the next surgery and show them next time they ask what’s

wrong ‘oh let me show you this’!

Hello Tom from Maine, I live in NH near the seacoast. I

always thought this was a double edge sword the good news is that it probably won’t

kill you, the bad news is you will live with these symptoms for a very, very long

time! I have gotten to a place where my symptoms are relatively under control

but it still can broadside me when I least expect it. I am not a mountain

climber by any means, it took a long time to get my symptoms under control and

I am terribly out of shape. It seems my asthma kicks up when ever I start an

exercise routine. I need to learn to go slow and steady and not get

discouraged.

this poster.

Though, I don't get ear infections I too have issues when irrigating

with my Neli Med. I can " feel " my ears getting full of water when

using the device. Thus, I only irrigate on an as needed basis. I am

overly concerned about further damaging myself and loosing my hearing.

One thing that I've often noticed as well is when blowing my nose, my

right ear clogs, I get really bad vertigo, and my body teperature

raises. This can go on for several minutes until something

de-pressurizes and my ear makes a " fizzle " sound and I am ok!

I have had lots of helpful suggestions

that I should find a job that doesn’t bother my health……any suggestions?

In re: to not meeting

anyone else face to face, I wanted you to know that made me chuckle. I'm at the

point that I roll my eyes every time a coworker asks me, " Are you stuffed

up again? " No, people, not " again " -- " still. " I've

worked here five and a half years. You don't know by now that I'm stuffed up

every day?

Actually, during my performance review after my second year, a supervisor had

the gall to write in the comments, " Bob is routinely sick and should

attend to his health. " I had violent thoughts. I may have had violent

words to go with them.

Knowing you all understand helps a lot. I don't know who started this group but

I'm grateful.

I guess that depends on what factors bother you most. I work in an office, in a city. One would think that was pretty "safe", but I find things like cold air, bus exhaust, and dust from the paper shredder will set me off. My symptoms were most under control when I did desk side support (I'm a computer consultant) which had me moving most of the day from person to person throughout a school district. However, that job actually predates my diagnosis, and my symptoms may not have been fully developed. I guess I don't have a suggestion, but we might be able to come up with some if you tell us what your career is, or what your skills and talents are. Re: I can't irrigate

I am a teacher in a school and unfortunately for children, our schools are some of the moldiest, run down buildings in this country. But, I love what I do. I do live with significant symptoms most of the time although they are better since I did aspirin desens. last July. My thinking has always been, why would I stop working as a teacher when I know I get symptoms from driving on the highway or sometimes from simply walking near someone in the grocery store wearing perfume? I wear an ionizer around my neck all the time and constantly have to field questions asking what it is? Oh well, maybe I am educating the public! I'm not sure there is a healthy place to work unless someone truly can create that "bubble" we can put ourselves into. I'm telling you, I really think we were all dropped off on the wrong planet!!! Dear Tom

Re: How long we will live with Samters:

I developed rhinitis, polyps and asprin induced asthma when I was 9. Chronic asthma started in my late 20's after my first and before my second pregnancy. I am now 49! I have been able to live with Samters for 40 years, brought up 2 children, worked for 26 years, still working as the head teacher of a secondary school... I'm planning to live for another 40 years :)) hopefully. I don't understand how your doctor could predict your life span.

During the late 60's, early 70's, when my illness started there weren't the medicines of today, in Turkey, where I live. I had numerous operations, suffered a lot of discomfort. Thanks God, Ventolin (salbutamol) became available when I was at university, then the steroid sprays. Now, with Nasonex, Flixotide, Claritine, Ventolin, Singulair, I have more comfort. I have not met any other Samters patients. I am very happy to have found this group. Please plan to live for 40 more years:))

Best wishes

I just

tell people I have allergies and when they ask what I’m allergic to my

standard response is “Air.” But it does get old getting the

hairy eyeball when you are blowing your nose in public and you can just tell

they are thinking that sick person should be at home. At least at work

everyone now knows I’m allergic to everything and leaves me alone.

I don’t know anyone else with Samter’s

but I do know several people (including my dad who has had 3 now) who have all

had sinus surgeries for polyps.

K.

Re: I can't

irrigate

My staple response

now-a-days has been I have incurable sinus disease.

Then I crack a joke about having big " snot rockets " affixed inside my

sinus cavities. It tends to get the point across.

I can relate to the voice part. I am a politician although I prefer to call it a representative of the people. I speak at a lot of engagements and sometimes I find myself not responding to an item at a meeting because at that particular moment my voice or throat is acting up. Several times I have had to cancel out of speaking commitments. I have considered running for Governor but due to Samters' I have ruled it out.

I cannot smell and have minimal taste but what I miss the most is the ability to have a 5 minute kiss. If I could only hold my breath that long.
