International Training Programme on: SURVEILLANCE, MONITORING AND EVALUATION

OF HIV/AIDS PROGRAMMES. September 17-22, 2001. Indian Institute of Health

Management Research, Jaipur, India

RATIONALE

As HIV continues to spread around the world, it has become increasingly clear

that the epidemic follows different course and affects different geographical

areas or societies in different ways. This has complicated the task of

monitoring its course, intervening to prevent its further spread and

planning to minimise its impact. The diversity of HIV spread has further

increased the relevance of a thorough understanding of the nature of each

country's epidemic.

Such an understanding can only be achieved with the mapping of people most

at risk in different geographical areas and with more information about

behaviours which have put them at risk. Behavioural data also help focus

sero-surveillance resources for maximum information about the HIV epidemic,

trends in the prevalence of mature epidemics, and assessment of the impact

of the programmed interventions.

OBJECTIVES

The broad objective of the programme is to strengthen the technical

capabilities of participants in surveillance, monitoring and evaluation of
