Guest guest
Hi all, as many of you know, I had my second sinus surgery 6 weeks ago -my first frontal surgery since I developed Samters. My frontals were always blocked up, but it pretty much took me the ten years to find someone competant and confident enough in the UK to clear out my frontals. The operation went well and the surgeon was happy with his work (although he didn't visit me post-op to say this...another Dr told me) 2 weeks after my surgery i received a phone call from the ENT clinic asking me to come to an emergency apointment as something has come up in the histology results from my surgery and they wanted to see me urgently. I tried to get details from them over the phone but they wouldn't give any saying they needed to see me. To cut a long story short, I was unable to see them before the scheduled appointment yesterday. I also had received a letter to say that the histogoly results did not show andy signs of malignancy (ie cancer) but it did show a fungal infection which 'was not consistant with the clinical picture). As you can imagine I have been trying to discover what this could mean. Yesterday I finally saw the surgeon (not the guy who actually did my surgery, but the one who should have done it - again, another long story). He had a really good look in my sinuses and then said with great releif and happiness that my sinuses look great and the surgeon did a really good job of clearing out my polyps and the gunk there. I asked him what had actually been growing in my sinuses and he said that it had been invasive aspergillosis. I have since done some research on this and am stunned and shocked to discover what I could have potentially had to deal with. Im not sure actually how I could have been harbouring this and not become far sicker. The surgeon said that I may have had an allergy to this fungus, or ....I'm not too sure. Anyway, apparently I am now better and there is no evidence of any residual infection. I was told that if I continue to do my nasal washes and take the aspirin and flixonase then I should be fine. I am not sure whether I have really just had a 'brush with death' or whether this infection is something that many of us have, and unless we are really immunocompromised, we should be fine at fighting it.
