Guest guest
I use what is essentially Ringer's solution: http://personal.ecu.edu/wuenschk/Nasal-Irrigation.htm sinus rinse with saline solution I was wondering what solutions are used in this and what products do people use to rinse their noses with. I use a salt and water mixture and a neti pot (looks like an Aladdin's lamp). The rinsing helps some for me. Plus allergy shots work a little. I'm up to my highest dosage. Is there anything else to try. Right now I'm on an elimination diet, the book is by Sue Dengate, it's called The Failsafe Cookbook. I've been on this for about a week. I've had one nasal surgery and my polyps were back in a year. My ears are just starting to get plugged, but thank-goodness not often. A doctor said I should do the aspirin desensitizing. I'm on 6 prescription med. and one homeopathic. I'm a new member from Michigan, 15 years old.-
Guest guest
Your solution seems much more complicated than what my Doctor recommended: http://www.neilmed.com/ Have you tried this one? Is there any evidence that your solution is better? Kim -----Original Message-----From: Karl L. Guest guest
Hi Kim, I do not find it difficult to measure one teaspoon of sea salt and 1/4 tsp of baking soda in 2 cups of boiling water. This costs me a few pennies a week -- probably cheaper than any commercially available solution. Your solution is isotonic, which should be better than a hypertonic solution. The evidence that a Ringer's solution may be preferable was cited in my page (along with 32 other references): There is some recent evidence that irrigation with a simple isotonic saline solution (NaCl 0.9%) can slow mucociliary clearance [boek W. M., Keles N., Graamans K., & Huizing E. H. (1999). Physiologic and hypertonic saline solutions impair ciliary activity in vitro. Laryngoscope 109, 396-399]. The cilia, tiny hair-like structures, normally beat gunk out of the sinuses. Isotonic saline can reduce this action, and hypertonic saline (saltier than isotonic) is reputed to be able to produce permanent damage to the cilia, but a Ringer's solution does not have this potentially undesirable effect. I would not worry about it much based on a single study, but for those who are mixing up their own isotonic solutions, it might not hurt to use refined sea salt rather than simple sodium chloride. From the sea we all came.......
