What is the technique for nasal sprays. I haven't been told. I just

hold the tip close to my nostril and breath in while I spray. Similar

to my albuterol technique.

My ENT told me to use the ‘mecca’ method

when using nasonex. That is to bend over so your head is virtually upside down

and then spray it up each nostril. It’s supposed to be much for affective this

way.

I use Flonase and I simply put the tip up inside my nose, hold the other side closed, and squirt. I sniff afterwards. I'm pretty sure this is how the directions show to do it, complete with pictures. I might tilt my head slightly forward, but mostly just hold it upright. I find if I lean back I get too much into my throat and I can taste it and that is generally just icky. Afterwards I do usually tilt my head backwards to try to keep it from running out and I try not to blow my nose immediately afterwards. Keeping my head upright and leaning back afterwards keeps it out of my throat and in my nose where it belongs. Most nasal sprays come with detailed directions in the insert, so I am pretty sure that is where I got this technique from. I'm fairly neurotic about reading all the package inserts when I get a new drug.

Some of the nasal sprays do not work if you are upside down. You

have to spray them in and then go upside down. I actually go off the

side of my bed and stay that way for a while to get it up into the

sinuses.

I just get a little amused every time someone asks all these detailed

questions about the onion juice, as if it's very scientific. It's not

scientific at all. It hasn't been studied. A few of us have found

success using it. I don't think any of us use it the same way.

So experiment and see what works for you.

I personally boil up an onion -- I don't know what the hell kind it is

nor do I care. Then I use the solution in my neti pot with saline and

hot water. I use the same solution for a few days, after which I throw

it away because it can get moldy. I suppose you could keep it in the

fridge and it would last longer.

I don't use it all the time by any means, only when I have an infection

coming on, which has not been the case in a while now, so I haven't

used it in a while.

I’ve just returned from the doctor

and he suggests adding more onions to the diet as this is very good for sinus

problems. As to the mecca position for the sinus sprays he’s all for

spraying it in and then going upside down, works about 60% better that way

according to him.

I have been so busy until I have not checked this site since June. I am so sorry for replying so late. I don't have to use the onion juice anymore. I use to use a syringe to push the warm water with onion juice through my nostrils just the same as when I use the nettie pot. The nettie pot is all that I do now and it is just to keep the little crust from forming. I do have trouble with my ears but polyps are not a problems for me neither is asthma. I still eat two oranges everyday and I feel fine. Again. I apologize for responding so late.

I would use just plain old white or yellow onions. They all work the same. I do find myself using breath mints more or chewing a little parsley for my breath. My husband said it came out of my nose when I breath on him.

Hi Gwen,

Your case is very interesting, because I don't want to sound like an

unbeliever in oranges, or pessimistic, or whatever else, but I see no

good reason why oranges could help. They do contain vitamin C, some

flavonoids, but nothing revolutionary against Samter's.

So, if they work fine for you, that's really great, but I have no idea

why. Maybe some other, non-obvious factor is involved somewhere. I

read in a previous post that you took anti-IgEs but stopped, if my

memory is correct. Anti-IgE do have some " lag-effect " , so maybe that

could have helped and the effect would be still ongoing (just a

possibility) ?

Anyhow, I have been trying two, then down to one orange a day since

you recommended it, with no effect at all, but I have really

rediscovered the pleasure of eating ripe, fresh oranges at breakfast

and I think I'll keep them on the menu. So, even if it doesn't work on

me, thanks for the idea !

Citrus fruits also have natural antihistimines in them. I believe that is what has helped me. the nettie pot has also been helpful. At the present time, I can smell, taste and I feel great. My chest has stopped wheezing and I am feeling great. I do not know what has happened but I do know that I feel marvelous!!!!
