Guest guest
Hi I am also aspirin sensitive and cannot take ibuprofen or aleve (naproxen). I have been taking Bextra without problem for 2 years now. Check with your Doctor to see if this is safe for you. We all react differently to things so you will need to talk to your Doc. Guest guest
Hello, thank you for the advice. Could you tell me what is the active ingridient of Bextra? Since I am in the different country, the brand name might be different. Thanks again, Ebru > Hi > I am also aspirin sensitive and cannot take ibuprofen or aleve (naproxen). Guest guest
Hi Ebru The chemical name for Bextra is Valdecoxib. Hope you can find it. Marcus
Guest guest
Ebru, Please look at my letter posted Failsafe diet. Have been where you are - by going on this diet for at least a month you will have no more reason to use pain killers. Salicylates in foods are causing your arthitis, and it takes quite a while to be removed from your system by the kidneys. Aspririn and salicylates compete for removal. Medication is only releaving symptoms - please remove the cause which might also be preservatives and colourants and all other additives added to foods! Good luck and pass on this info. I have just joined as member - free from the Samter's Triad! > > Hello everyone, > I am asprin-sentisitive and NSAI painkillers-sensitive. > I was only able to take " vioxx " and now its prohibited. > What am I going to take now for my pain? I am not sure what it available where you are and what would cause any reaction in you, but I take Ultram (Tramadol) for pain instead of any Tylenol or Aspirin based painkillers. Trudy. Guest guest
Hi Ebru, I've been taking Celebrex for years now and it's kept polyps under control for years. I quit taking it today because Vioxx got pulled. I believe they are twin drugs just made by different companies. It's devastating for me too, because surgeries will be more often than 3 years apart. And since I'm allergic to all over the counter pain meds I am stuck depending on a narcotic for relief of pain. And as we all know Chronic headaches and pressure are part of samters once the polyps return. I feel like a drug addict if I take more than 30 pain pills a year, but what's my alternative besides desensitization. Which I would love to do, but have horrible stomach problems now and am afraid problems will get worse. I can't take steroids either which is a huge temporary solution to reducing polyp size. I feel so incredibly alone right now. I'm sorry for going so into detail. I'm just having a hard time dealing with this disease right now. It will get better in time. Tami in Wis. asprin & NSAI Hello everyone, I am asprin-sentisitive and NSAI painkillers-sensitive.I was only able to take "vioxx" and now its prohibited. What am I going to take now for my pain? Guest guest
Tami: There is no reason that you have to stop taking celebrex. They are not the same drug. Also Bextra is probably an option for you as well. If the med you have been taking works- no reason to stop it. You could also have your stomach looked at to see what the problem is and then try desensitization. Then you could use the coated aspirin. I tried almost every formulation but finally settled on Costco's enteric coated aspirin which is the easiest of all and the cheapest. This was much better than even the buffered aspirin. The desens was SO helpful - it seems reasonable to try. Carol asprin & NSAI Hello everyone, I am asprin-sentisitive and NSAI painkillers-sensitive.I was only able to take "vioxx" and now its prohibited. What am I going to take now for my pain? Guest guest
I agree with Carol. Even if Celebrex is shown to have some heart risk, you are taking it for a serious disease. The alternative drugs such as very high dose prednisone have risks of diabetes and severe immunodeficiency and osteoporosis. All drugs have risks, the risk you are willing to tolerate in a patient are significantly greater as their disease is more serious. An example is chemotherapy for cancer or anticoagulants in people with a deep vein thrombosis. Aspirin desensitization has been a godsend for me. Not only has it reduced polyp formation and sudden severe allergic reactions to everything under the sun and the severe asthma. It is nice to be able to take an aspirin when one hurts. There are ways of protecting the stomach. There are drugs like pepcid which are cheap and over the counter and also prilosec. These drugs are very powerful and changed the face of ulcer management from surgical to medical when the first came out. There are also perscription drugs like carafate, which coat the stomach, and misoprostol. Misoprostol must not be used in women who may become pregnant because it induces labor, but it was developed for the protection of the stomach from aspirin like drugs. Also for those Samters patients who have trouble swallowing( I do), Carol is right the coated aspirin is best. I started with regular Bayer when I got desensitized, but got a nasty esophagitis which really hurt. .
