Guest guest
Well, I am glad to know I am not the only one having the leaky nose problem! I have always felt that it was coming from my maxillary sinuses and not my frontals. Sometimes I can feel pressure in them and bending over to let my nose drain seems to relieve that some. My ENT looked at me like I was nuts when I told him about it. He has no idea why it is happening though he did say the inside of my sinuses is really moist. But then again, he has no idea why my sinuses are as screwed up as they are. He does not believe it is the Samter’s but I like him and he is prescribing the stuff I need that is helping and he is not one to jump to surgery. I am not on oral steroids but I do use Flonase twice a day, I wonder if that has an effect? Not that I am going to stop the Flonase to find out!! I thought maybe it was the infection I had but that is gone now (I think) and I am still having the leaky nose, though not quite as bad. And my sense of smell is totally back again after 2 weeks of antibiotics so I am very happy. I’m still paranoid something at work is making my sinuses worse but there is simply nothing I can do about that right now. So I carry Kleenex around in my pockets all the time so I can hold them to my nose whenever I have to bend over. It really is embarrassing to be in the lab helping someone with an instrument problem and bend over and have to rush to grab a tissue! Fortunately by now most people know I have allergies and don’t freak out when I blow my nose and ask if I am sick. I have found it is easy to say, “No, it is allergies” and people accept it and move on. I have not had the burning or ammonia smell when this happens. That does not sound pleasant!! K. water leak from sinuses I've experienced the water leak. I believe this is from the frontals. Has anyone ever had burning when the thin water like mucus comes out? It feels like someone dumped acid in my snout. And it smells like ammonia when this happens. I always thought it was probably infection. Any thoughts? Guest guest
, You definitely have Samters but your ENT does not believe it is the Samters causing your sinus problems? Hmm ... well, Samters can really screw up your sinuses, that's all I'll say about that! I use the "oh, it's just allergies" comment ALL the time. But sometimes I am so congested it sounds like a cold, especially over the phone. But I don't like people to think I'm "sick" all the time, sick like with a cold or especially anything contagious, so I usually say "chronic sinus stuff" and leave it at that. I've had a lot of trouble lately especially when we were on vacation with people trying to get me to drink alcohol, which really screws up the Samters symptoms. In Europe in particular it is almost unheard of not to drink and women drink even during pregnancy so it was difficult to deal with. Guest guest
After my first sinus surgery, my ENT warned me about the " leak " . He had basically hollowed out a lot of my sinus cavity, since he said that I would likely get polyps back and this would allow me to wait longer before I had to have surgery again. As I recall, it's the maxillary sinuses that flow unexpectedly when you bend over. I remember it happening one time during a conference room presentation to our corporate chairman. Not fun. I still have the problem sometimes after I irrigate. I think it also happens after prednisone when your sinuses first open up. Looks like it's common to many of us. Guest guest
Yup, he thinks maybe the Samter’s makes it all a little worse, but that it isn’t the major underlying cause. After reading as much as I have on this list, I am convinced it is the Samter’s! My allergies do not help matters either. I understand the sounding stuffed up thing. I was so happy the other day when my stepmother commented that I actually didn’t sound stuffed up over the phone for a change! I was glad I got the antibiotics despite the nasty side effects, my sinuses feel so much better. And now I know what to look for as this sinus infection wasn’t as horrible as others I have had so I think it lingered for a long time. I do still drink, but only occasionally. Sometimes it will screw me up and sometimes it doesn’t, so I roll the dice and enjoy some wine once in awhile. I find that lately my nose just stuffs up over night then I am fine the next day. Especially right now since I can smell! I avoid it when I can’t as there is no point and honestly some wines can be downright nasty if your sense of smell is screwed up! But I do love wine and good food and so long as it doesn’t totally screw up my nose I can deal with it… K. Guest guest
I’m pretty sure it is my maxillaries. Sometimes my frontals get really clogged and hurt really bad but I don’t get the liquid draining from them, that seems to be thicker. And the liquid goes out the nose and never seems to go down my throat. Maybe singing in my car has kept my asthma from getting too bad?? J I am certainly able to sing more and more loudly in the car now that my sinuses are clearer. K. Re: water leak from sinuses Is everyone sure it is the maxillary that leaks? The only reason I believe it's the frontals is because my frontals are almost always shut down, and every now and then I get this feeling in my frontals, so I instantly lay down and if I'm quick enough some thin liquid will drain down the back of my throat. The sensation of something moving is in my frontals and usually some pressure headache relief is felt after it happens. Years ago I use to always lay on my back and roll slowly from side to side to relieve some frontal pressure. It doesn't happen much anymore though. I rarely ever have to blow my nose anymore. I know though that when I had polyps in my maxillaries I had many stuffy days and sneezing attacks. One thing I did realize recently is that our bodies adjust to our diminished breathing and it seems so gradual, we don't even notice it. I've been playing my guitar and singing more lately and it seems to really help with lung issues. I would think it's a good thing to try and take deeper breaths. Everyone start singing in your car, loudly. Hold the notes longer too. You'll see what I mean. Tami Re: water leak from sinuses After my first sinus surgery, my ENT warned me about the " leak " . Guest guest
I'm not sure whether its the frontals or maxillary, but I can relate to the feeling of pressure in the sinuses on my upper cheeks and between the eyes, because I used to lean forward to drain my sinuses just to get relief. Its almost as if I can feel it when they fill up. Then I lean forward and turn my head from side to side to empty it and it feels a lot better. And wow, I didn't realize that liquor is what made my sinuses react. I always knew that my sinuses always acted up when I went out to clubs, but I thought it was from the cigarette smoke, so I always popped about 10mg of Prednisone before going out. I always did get even a little congested though and extra leaky. I use to take Zyrtec and it worked but for me not any better than Claritin D and Claritin is much cheaper too. With me having this condition for so long, I just got tired of all the pill popping and sinus sprays. At this point I just keep it simple, 5mg of prednisone, 2-sprays of flonase in each nostril, 3-drops of maxidex, (which is a medicated eye drop) everyday and 1cc (a full needle) of prednisone in my sinuses every 3months. Though I hate taking Prednisone, it is all that keeps my whole upper respiratory system from shutting down, because I've taken it for so long my body is dependant on it. This also keeps the surgeries limited. Wow, looking at what I just typed, that still seems like a lot to take, but I use to take about 8 pills and 3 sinus sprays per day. Guest guest
Hey ya'll - I also had the 'water leak' right after my 4th surgery. The doctors couldn't figure out why I was having so much drainage in the mornings when I would sit up in the bed, or while leaning over during the day....It would gush out, just as ya'll have discribed. The ENT doc's couldn't 'see' anything when they looked at my sinuses with their scopes. It just looked extra wet. But, then they decided to have me take a sample cup (the sterilized cups with lids used in hospitals) and collect this liquid the next morning. It was a cloudy color, and I collected about a quarter cup upon waking the next morning. They sent this sample liquid to the lab to look for any infections and for the possibility of a CSF Leak. It came back in a few days as a positive CSF Leak. I had to have a repair surgery almost immediately to plug this up. I have had drainage while on steroids, too - just because the meds open up the sinuses, and they drain better....but my CSF leak was alot more fluid than what I get while on steroids. You all might ask your doctors to test the fluid just to double check exactly what it is that is pouring out of your nose. I am glad I did - having a CSF leak is very dangerous, and can lead to more problems than anyone wants to deal with. I'm not trying to scare anyone - but better to be safe and get it tested, just in case. kz (tx) > > > , > > > > You definitely have Samters but your ENT does not believe it is the Samters causing your sinus > > problems? Guest guest
If I bend over too far I get a " water leak " quite often. I've never had it hurt or burn though. I haven't had a sense of smell in a very long time so of course there is no ammonia smell either. It can be very embarrassing though :-( I've experienced the water leak.
