Beverley,Sounds like you live in a beautiful place, and I'm sorry you have such a tough situation. I'm really curious -- how is it that the 2nd(?) desensitization process failed? I haven't heard of this before -- what happened -- was it done the same way as the first? I really hope you keep your sense of smell -- at least enjoy it while you have it.All the best,JoanOn Oct 2, 2010, at 4:29 PM, anaturallearner wrote:

My immunologist said it was very easy to recognise fungal sinusitis, and I imagine a simple test would confirm it. If it is positive then a course of anti-fungal medication should prove useful. Don't use them unless you are tested and it is positive.

I've had polyps since childhood (five polypectomies so far); my frontal and ethnoid sinuses have been blocked since my teen years. I average 6 years between surgeries. I use Rhinocort (Budesonide nasal spray twice a day.

My asthma is being controlled by Seretide (Fluticasone propionate/Salmeterol xinafoate) and Singluar (montelukast sodium).

I was better when I was desensitised to aspirin but needed an operation and had to stop taking it - the last desensitisation process failed.

I haven't had a sense of smell for close on 30 years (lost it in my early 20s), though it would rarely break through for a day or so, and would come back for up to three weeks after nasal surgery.

My ENT is going to put a T-Tube in my ear as the eustachian tube doesn't drain and wanted to remove the polyps again as I have 80% blockage. However, after vomiting forcefully following anesthesia from an operation four weeks ago my sense of smell has returned. I'll be interested to see what he has to say when I see him next. :-)

I've had a barrage of allergy tests done, skin and blood, and I'm not allergic to anything except aspirin and NSAIDS.

We live in a low allergy house - all natural timbers, leather furniture, low allergy personal products, a couple of miles from the beach (cleaner air), in the country. It's a pain living with this condition - the worse bit is losing muscle strength and depression which are the most debilitating aspects of it for me.

Thanks for reading my story.

No, for those who do not know it, I am not a health professional but a patient

with some rusty scientific training who started researching from scratch 4 years

ago. For anyone willing to invest some time to learn about sinusitis, the first

year is a bit tough but then things gradually appear easier - so no one should

really be afraid to read medical texts even if they do not understand everything

at first. Of course, don't try to take risky clinical decisions based on texts

that you feel unsure of - read easier texts to complement, take advice and

discuss the matter with (open-minded) doctors.

The golden standard for sinus pathogen culture is by performing an endoscopic

swab - ie going right there into the sinus with an endoscope. If you have a lot

of mucus coming out, testing the mucus is an imperfect substitute and may or may

not work depending on the germ.

Thank you for such a well written summary of the condition, possible causes and

useful information.

I have taken fish oil most days for the past three years - coinciding with the

best years (less symptoms) of my adult life.

I think it was the vomiting that did the trick for me - very forceful. I've had

operations for things other than sinuses before without any return of my sense

of smell. I will ask my ENT about it.

It's weird being able to smell again after not having a sense of smell for so

long: I'm finding lots of smells too strong, especially those that remind me of

petrol, like mown grass and when I'm pulling out weeds. I can only assume that

there are high in turpenes. I remember reacting to strong perfumes as a child -

would get a sinus migraine which would always end with me vomiting.

Amazing. If this good fortune persists, it could make for a case report. There

are some of anesthesia shutting down the sense of smell, but none of restoring

it. Could it be that the acidity from the stomach cleaned out the olfactory

area? Normally, any vomit would go out by the mouth, not up to the sinus area.

My immunologise thinks the desens failed because my asthma wasn't under good

enough control. I had stopped taking Singulair three months before - at $3 per

tablet we thought it was too expensive at the time.

All my desens were supervised by the same doctor at the same hospital. He's also

seen my daughter and son (one has asthma and the cholinergic urticaria - he

sayshe's never seen a case of cholinergic urticaria that extreme or persistent).

Three years ago I discovered that I have relatives on my dad's side of the

family with chronic sinus problems.

I am sensitive to dusts but not allergic to the dust mite (allergy tests showed

normal reaction to most things, not enough to be causing the polyps, urticaria

or asthma). As a result we don't have airconditioning or ceiling fans as that

keeps dust circulating in the air.

Someone mentioned zinc supplements - I started zinc, vit Bs, fish oil, vitamin D

(tests showed I was deficient) three years ago, as well as glucosomine with

chondroitin (osteoarthritis, another inflammatory condition). I mostly take the

others to help combat the depression - seems to be working.

Nope, I did ask but they said the treatment was pretty nasty and I looked OK at the moment (6 weeks post-op). I was then signed off from that ENT. I've signed myself back onto another, more local ENT so hopefully will be seen by them sometime in the next 6 months.

Wow. They confirmed you had fungus and didn’t treat you afterwards with antifungals?? Have you tried them since or asked your doctor about them? I may be skeptical about treating someone without a confirmed issue, but when it is confirmed I am kind of surprised the follow-up treatment didn’t include an antifungal.

I wish I was treated with a fungal med. I was found to have invasive aspergillosis which was taken out at my last op, yet I wasn't given any fungal meds. I now of course have the same issues with infection as I did before my op. I feel no better at all, and my sos only returned for one week.

I’ve heard the thing about “most people with Samer’s have fungal sinusitis before.†I’m not convinced. I am not allergic to mold. It was one of the few things I did not react to when I was tested and I have never had any sort of reaction I can connect to molds. I was tested for fungal sinusitis, though I do believe that test came back “inconclusive.†The ENT I was seeing at the time even had me do a course of anti-fungal oral med, which is nasty stuff. I think I took it for a month, maybe it was longer. But it didn’t do anything to improve my nose so the conclusion was that mold was not a problem.

Hi Everyone,

Just thought I would let you know in my search to find a doctor that can actually help people with Samter's Triad I came across Dr. Tucker Allergist and Immunologist in West Palm Beach, Florida. Apparently people travel from all parts of the world to see Dr. Tucker with very rare allergy cases that most doctors can not help. Dr. Tucker who has got to be close to 80 years old actually worked on allergy cases with Max Samter, and knew him personally. I have not met a more worldly knowledgeable doctor in my life. He has written many books and is in Top Docs magazine.

He says that most people with nasal polyps also have allergies to mold and yeast. I really never tested positive to allergies at all no matter which allergist did a skin test on me. Most doctors will not do the kind of skin testing Dr. Tucker does. I had close to 200 allergy tests done, and have to go back tomorrow for him to review my skin again. He immediately talked about mold and diet. Most people have Fungal Sinusitis which also causes a lot of fungus and yeast in other parts of the body, as well as sinuses. His recommendation is 30 day treatment of oral Fungal medication along with diet, and he took a Qvar 40mg rescue Asthma inhaler and turned it into a sinus inhaler for my nose. Two puffs in each nostril I felt immediate relief from sinus congestion. It also gets into the lungs from the nose so it works for both. I would have never known that. He studies the many different allergy reactions the body has to different

things some allergens don't show up right away, and mainstream doctors only concentrate on Type I allergy reactions.

He also recommends herbal anti - inflammatory, and Omega 3 fish oil. Whole food diet especially RAW fruits and veggies which I already knew. No dairy either which I also knew. He also recommended x-clear nasal spray.

I will be seeing him again, but I am very hopeful of more he can do to help Samters.

Hi Asfy,

I don't know to be honest - most likely not as bad yet, but certainly my sinuses are back to their usual state of being in pretty poor condition.

I expect my diet could be better, but right now I'm finding it hard to know exactly what is the perfect diet for my sinuses, and by the end of an exhausting day I just dream of a glass of wine, which sometimes I allow myself to have and sometimes I don't. I think I'm just in a rut at the moment.

The ENT and my GP didn't say specifically any antifungal - they both said that they would prescribe me that antifungal medicine unless it was absolutely necessary as it was toxic. I didn't ask about the name of any particular one. I was told that I looked well, and if the fungus had started to invade me (more than my sinuses and polyps) then I would be feeling really ill. So that's basically what I need to look out for - a feeling of being really ill :-) The trouble is that I'm left now with a concern that I have to be particularly carfeul about my health - even more so than before. Sorry to be vague - i really think my last meeting with my ENT left me with more questions than answers.

The info from the article is taking a long time to download but I will have a look at it. I do actually have a pretty good diet, but am still working my way through a few choccies given to my for my 40th birthday! Then there's all the wine left over from my party, but I actually don't like alcohol much! I'll be giving it away for christmas pressies I guess.

Edit below to add that the Dr's WOULDN'T prescribe me the antifungal medicine unless absolutely necessary.

I can see the file on anticancer foods now - it's all in french, but luckily there are pictures :-)))

My diet is pretty good, especially as we grow a lot of our own organic fruit and veggies, and I make nearly all our meals from scratch. I just like a bit of sugar and chocolate unfortunately. And I know that sugar will encourage fungal growth.

Anyway, enough of my ramblings.......

This is a strange way of fighting fungal infections - waiting for the patient to

become seriously ill, then feeding him a toxic drug. I hope they know what they

are doing...

You can't have a bad diet if you eat what you grow plus the occasional pastry,

but wine and alcohol, as you know, will increase the inflammation. But who can

resist cakes on birthdays ?

I know, it concerned me a little (or a lot!) I have to trust that this ENT knows what he is doing.

I am gluten/wheat free so even my cakes have to be fairly healthy as they are homemade!

The site you posted is very worthwhile looking at, because it has some really interesting info on which food are real cancer fighters. I am a big fan of garlic anyway and tend to add it to most meals in the hopes it's doing me good ;-)

Hi,I have been meaning to respond to a couple of the email threads below.. I believe fungus/ mold plays a big role in my husband having nasal polyps. He had a mold problem in our last apartment, which he lived in for 7 years. I lived there for the last 2 of those years. I don't suffer from nasal polyps, but my hair consistently fell out for the entire time I was there. We moved about a year ago, and it was only until then that I realized mold was a common denominator to our health issues. Immediately my hair stopped falling out. He still has polyps issues, but it turns out the place we moved to is located next to a recycling plant. The possibility of fine particles in the air is probably not the best for him! We are set to move again in 2 months, and hopefully our next place will be in a much healthier environment! Thanks for discussing the issue of mold. And , I have a relative in his late 60's and on his 5th wife in her late 20's. We sort of have a slight running joke/bet in our family about how long it will last. You are not alone. Wishing you the best during this time.SabinaSent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerryFrom: Bannister <beckyb256@...>Sender: samters Date: Tue, 5 Oct 2010 07:22:05 +0100 (BST)<samters >Reply samters Subject: Re: Re: I hope this helps some of you. Hi Milliam,

No I haven't but would like to! Which antifungals did you use? I currently have a yucky infection that's really affecting my frontals, but I started rinsing with antibiotics and it is getting a lot better - has been very responsive, so hopefully this current infection is mainly bacterial.

Thanks for your help,

Becky

Hi Becky

To make a long story short I had no SOS for almost three years. I have thought I tried everything (anti-biotics, predisone, surgery ect.....) The sympotms allways came back. I am pretty sure the root cause of all this for me is Fungal. Untreated this led to bacterial infections then polyps. Anyhoo I found a doctor here in the Bay area that hooked me up with a anti-fungal rinse and it worked!!! I have had no inflamation and got back 100 % of my sos and the inflamation has not returned. This mix is coming from a compounding pharmacy in Los Angeles named ASL Pharmacy. They deliver the saline solutions and meds to my door which is nice. This is what I put in the rinse.

1) 2 vials of Amphotericin B (anti-fungal) 2) 1 vial of Budesonide

3) I also put in a little bit of Mupirocin (anti-bacterial)

I mix this in 100ML of saline solution and shake it all up and I'm ready to go. (it took about 4-5 weeks to work but I started feeling better right away) Hopfully maybe this can help you. Let me know how it goes.

Thanks,

Andy

Do you do this once a day or twice? Is the solution from ASL the Amphotericin B or is it an additional anti-fungal? Do you do a regular saline rinse as well? And I still can't quite figure out how to get Mupirocin to dissolve in saline. Thanks for this info.JoanOn Oct 20, 2010, at 10:28 AM, Andy wrote:

I do the rinse twice a day right now. The anti-fungal solution from ASL is the Amphotericin B. This is the only rinse I use now. The Mupirocin is a ointment that I put in the rinse. It's kind of a weird thing to put in the solution but what ever works so I dont care. I just shake it up and it seems to dissolve just fine for me. I hope this helps. Let me know...this solution has been a godsend for me.

hello all,my husband's doctor has him inhaling 1 vial of budesonide directly between both nostrils each night (recently he has cut it down to every other night). not sure if this is the healthiest in the long run, but with that said, he has his sense of smell, and taste, back for the first time in years!! he is thrilled! and seems he may have even put on a little bit of weight.. from enjoying food again! ;)best, sabinaFrom: Andy

I mix this in 100ML of saline solution and shake it all up and I'm ready to go. (it took about 4-5 weeks to work but I started feeling better right away) Hopfully maybe this can help you. Let me know how it goes.

Thanks,

Andy

Hi Milliam,

No I haven't but would like to! Which antifungals did you use? I currently have a yucky infection that's really affecting my frontals, but I started rinsing with antibiotics and it is getting a lot better - has been very responsive, so hopefully this current infection is mainly bacterial.

Thanks for your help,

Becky

Becky,Have you tried a anti-fungal sinus rinse? Thats what worked for me! • 2 months later...

Back in October I reported that after ankle surgery I regained my sense of

smell. It lasted for 3 months - a record for me. Even after sinus surgery to

remove polyps (and I've had five of those) it only lasted 3 weeks at best.

I wondered if it had been because I had vomited rather forcefully, rearranging

the polyps perhaps, but when I saw my ENT after for my post op visit after

inserting a T-Tube in my ear, he said my orthopedic surgeon probably gave me a

dose of dexamethasone intravenously during the ankle surgery. He check my polyps

and the right nostril had gone from about 90% blocked down to 30%, with a

similar effect in the left nostril. I have chronic polyp disease in my frontal

and ethnoid sinuses too, and suspect they had shrunk as well.

Next time the ENT wants to operate to remove polyps I'm going to ask about

intravenous dexamethosone as an alternative, provided it is okay with my

hematologist. :-)

cheers

Beverley
