Re: results of desensitization

Hi all

I have several questions that need a pretty quick answer.

I am scheduled for polyp surgery next week and my surgeon told me that I needed to stop taking aspirin 10 days prior to surgery. I know aspirin thins the blood and I guess slows clotting so I see the reason for stopping maybe the day before but why 10 days. I will need to then go through desens all over again.

Is it possible to just stop for a day or two so that the desens is still effective?

Will this create complications with my surgery if I don't stop 10 days prior?

I do not have bleeding issues on aspirin, cuts heal properly. I do bruise easily. I played paintball with my son and it looked like I had been tortured by a sadistic prison guard. Besides Samters I am perfectly healthy, excellent blood pressure and normal cholesterol levels maybe a little overweight due to lack of exercise. Its hard to exercise when you can't breath.

Thanks in advance for any advice or experiences you all have had.

Marcus

Hi! I'm sorry to hear you're not thrilled with your

desensitization. I'm wondering if you had surgery prior to the

desensitization and how long you've been desensitized. I'm having a

polpyectomy next week and then I'm scheduled to start my

desensitization in December. So I'm kinda bummed out to hear you

still have no sense of smell. I was all ready to taste my Christmas

dinner (smile).

Hi Marcus,

There are two answers to your question.

There is a guide for stepping down the aspirin before surgery in the files. It came from Dr. son at Scripps.

The aspirin cuts the number of platelets in your blood for as much as three weeks. Internal bleeding is different from skin cuts. The fact that you bruise easily may indicate that you will bleed more than they want during and after your surgery.

I would be honest with your surgeon.

Good luck,

Pam

Thanks Pam

I found the post you mentioned and will follow it religiously. I

really hate the idea of doing the desens all over again.

Hello

I am the one who posted the surgery protocal from Dr. son.

This does work and I done it 18 months ago when I went to Mayo to

have my frontals done. Another thing that I think is not mentioned

is that the minimun amount of ASA per day to stay desensitized is

82mg or 1 baby ASA. This was also told to me by Dr. son and

I had to do that for a couple weeks and I remained desensitized..

Hope this helps and good luck with the surgery.

Thanks Luke for that comment.

It seems to me that the lowest dose to keep desensitized would be prudent.

It is doubtful that 82mg would have any anti-inflammatory effects, though.

I'll try that next time I need to.

Thanks,

Pam

Marcus:

I also have had years of sinus problems along with polyps and am

scheduled to have FESS(sinus surgery) on January 23rd. Would like to

know how you are feeling after having the surgery. Thanks

Hi Luke

I had my surgery (image guided) 2 weeks ago and had to go back in for a debriding under anesthesia yesterday. The Doctor had cleaned out all of the polyps (and straightened out a deviated septum) but had problems getting the mucous out. It was so thick it was like rubber. He was going to do it in the office but after a couple of tries he decided to put me under and go in with the endoscope.

He said it was very successful. Using the image guided method was by far the best way to go. he said he was able to go further and clean out more than traditional methods.

I can smell and taste again and that is without any steroids. I still have a considerable amount of blood but it is improving. I am sure the fact that I started on aspirin the day after surgery both times isn't helping but I didn't want to lose my desense. All in all it was worth it just to be able to taste and smell again.

Good Luck on your surgery.

Marcus
