polyps growing back

The polyps for most Samters pretty much start growing back immediately

after surgery, I mean, immediately, not within weeks. It only takes

different lengths of time such as days, weeks or months for them to

become visible and cause symptoms for different people.

Surgery is NOT a cure for polyps. For those of you who have not heard

me say this before, I wish I had never had surgery the first time. I

think the scar tissue caused additional problems.

But now that I have had surgery, I have sometimes required it when I

have polyps protruding from the nose, if for no other reason than it's

socially completely disabling.

Lori --How can you breathe/sleep/live with those polyps without either shrinking them (prednisone) or taking them out surgically?truelori <lori@...> wrote: The polyps for most Samters pretty much start growing back immediately after surgery, I mean, immediately, not within weeks. I'm not sure I understand your question. First of all, I did not

say that my polyps are that large now. Second of all, I believe I

did say when they are that bad that I do resort to surgery. My

point was that I wish I never had had surgery in the first place

because it is not a cure for Samters (at least for no one that I

have ever known). If anything, my personal belief is it makes the

long-term course worse. However, once you go down that road, you

may not be able to go back. Seems those who have NEVER had surgery

are able to go without it. Certainly the first time I had the

surgery I didn't NEED it to live.

Prednisone also is extremely temporary.

I'm with you Lori. Not a day goes by that I don't regret having surgery. Mine was to "clean out my sinuses". My ENT told me after the surgery that he removed some polyps. OK, that's fine and I was fine for about 2 months. Then one night I actually felt a pop in my nose when I sneezed and then could no longer breathe thru that nostril; I could see this "thing". That was a Friday night. By the time I could see him on a Wednesday (he's in surgery Mon and Tues....ching, ching) but anyway, he told me that it was a polyp and he just couldn't believe that it was so big and so soon after surgery. That was when he asked me if I had any reactions to aspirin. I told him that the last time I had taken one I ended up in the Emergency Room getting a breathing treatment. Then he told me that I had Samter's Triad and that "you people are so hard to treat". Well, to make a looooooong story short, I have not been

able to breathe thru that nostril since that day (almost a year now), the other nostril is on again, off agian. I have done a couple of rounds of prednisone, I take ZyrtecD 2X daily, Singulair at bedtime, and Advair 2x daily. I stopped the Flonase becasue it actuall made me more congested. Bottom line.....before surgery, I could breathe thru my nose every day and every night. If only I could know then what I know now. Yeah, maybe that could have been if Dr's weren't so eager to get you into surgery and gave you all the facts. I guess at this point, all we can do is chalk it up to experience. Chins up everybody and keep the faith. Ronnietruelori <lori@...> wrote: I'm not sure I understand your question. First of all, I did not say that my polyps are that large

I guess I must be the exception here with my polyp history. I had my first nasal surgery in 1987, after having been diagnosed with Samter's in 1973. The dr said removing the polyps was "like peeling bunches of grapes." The polyps stayed away several years, then in 1996 I had a second polypectomy. The ENT gave me a (continued) clean bill of health last summer (2005), with no sign of the return of polyps yet. I don't irrigate, I have only used nasal steroids the last few months (they all give me headaches), but I do use OTC saline spray mist when I need it. I have been on steroids for many years, and just today began a reduced dose of 3 mg (been tapering down from 40 mg). I'll be curious to see what happens with them when I am finally off of steroids. Until then, I've been really lucky! I'd do the surgery again if I need to! Billie in TexasRonnie J <idontdosummer@...> wrote: I'm with you Lori. Not a day goes by that I don't regret having surgery. Billie, in saying you " have been on steroids for many years " , I assume you

are talking about Prednisone (perhaps I recall this from your earlier

posts).

If so, then yes, I'm not surprised that you do not have polyp regrowth. On

the other hand, I'd be curious about side effects which are so well

documented.

And, I predict when you are off Prednisone, the polyps will return.

If it is not Prednisone you are talking about, could you clarify exactly

what it is you are taking?

Thanks.
