Guest guest
Hi Steve,I'm 37. When I was still with my ex I found there were two things that helped: prednisone and exercise. Though, when I had sex on prednisone I felt like my heart was going to jump out of my chest. I'd imagine that's bad.I think fitness reduces my sex drive more than anything. For me, the samter's reduces my fitness, indirectly, by making it hard for me to breathe--an important component of exercise. The biggest challenge to my sex drive these days is solitude, but that's another topic entirely.Take care,Bob sideways topicGuys mainly but girls too, it's a question I have wanted to ask for a while but was somewhat reserved. My sex drive seems to be at an all time low at only 37 and I did notice that after my sinus operation some years ago it improved then off course diminished. Guest guest
Steve I was affected like this once, mainly due to the problem that I had difficulty breathing (to put it in sensitive terms, I felt like reaching for the ventolin whilst ‘in the act’ so to speak). Now though I find that by swapping evening for morning it’s an entirely different story. Unfortunately though it was part of the reason my previous marriage broke up, my ex husband used to complain that I was always tired and ‘sick’ and he lost interest in me. Guest guest
Steve, Wow.....never thought about this but yes, as has said I do feel that this has hindered not only my sex drive but much more. I have a hard time breathing at night which has caused me from not being able to breathe and have long passionate kisses anymore or to have my boyfriend hug on me for long periods of time because it makes me feel like I can't breathe.I have a really hard time when he wants to get close to my face because I have such difficulty breathing as it is. My sex drive is definitely down, not sure what is causing this if it's medical (from singulair or Claritin-D) or if it's just from feeling so run down all the time. > > Steve I was affected like this once, mainly due to the problem that I had > difficulty breathing (to put it in sensitive terms, I felt like reaching for > the ventolin whilst `in the act' so to speak). Guest guest
Bob I can’t snorkel anymore, a favorite hobby that I used to enjoy because I feel too much pressure around my lungs as though and it’s almost like a panic attack coming on and I have to have air and just forget underwater swimming, just not an option. I breathe through my mouth most of the time and like you worry that my breath my smell or even to the extent do I for that matter? Hence my reason for taking a few showers a day. Even around the home if something is ‘off’ I can’t smell it and my partner has ‘chided’ me on a number of occasions for the garbage smelling a bit off or something in the fridge smells a bit off. He can’t seem to understand that I just don’t have a sense of smell. Snoring unfortunately is another problem I tend to suffer and has said that on numerous occasions I’ll wake up from a snore gasping for air. I used to enjoy walking on the beach with my partner but not any more as he complains I walk too slow for him as he’s a very fast walker. I use excuses all the time such as stopping to look at a shell etc. just so I can get my breath back. Sometimes I feel as though I would love to have a partner who also suffers from Samters just so he could understand what it’s all about and maybe not get blamed for so many senseless little things. From: samters [mailto:samters ] On Behalf Of Bob Sent: Monday, 28 April 2008 4:00 AM samters Subject: Re: Re: sideways topic I'm not on much mediation, just albuterol as needed right now, and I feel the same. It's the same feeling I get when I'm swimming underwater and become disoriented or someone grabs me. Besides the fear of suffocation, I also get self conscious about breathing through my mouth when I'm that close to someone. Does it smell? Does it feel creepy? Am I sucking the air out of their mouth/nose? Most people reading seem to have more severe symptoms than I. When my symptoms were that bad I didn't want to be around people, period. sideways topic > Importance: High > > > > Guys mainly but girls too, it's a question I have wanted to ask for a while > but was somewhat reserved. Guest guest
Sexual drive is defintely influnced by smell. If you have no sense of smell, your sex drive is probably going to be lower. Lori
Guest guest
Prednisone really messes up the whole sexual system. When I'm on it, the drive is really high, but the feelings aren't quite right; and as I taper off the prednisone, the drive dwindles. Temporary ED sets in for a week or three, or until a hot piece of uhh...stimuli activates it. If it weren't for the frequent courses of prednisone, I think I would be fine in that department. > > > Guys mainly but girls too, it's a question I have wanted to ask for a whilebut was somewhat reserved. Guest guest
I'm 33. My sex drive isn't any lower. I don't know that I can really explain. Though I'm sure people can relate. I am not all that sexy. I'm constantly coughing and snorting and blowing and running and just being miserable. I want to have sex, I just don't want to be coughing and wiping and blowing and hawking and snorting while doing it. It's hard to get into it, for me and my husband, when I have to stop and hit the inhaler and wipe my nose. I have found that about 3 hours after I wake up would be a good time. Get up have a few cups of coffee, that helps with the breathing. Get good and awake. Like many samterites I have a touch of sleep apnea, so I'm tired when I wake up. I don't feel well in the mornings so right when I wake up isn't good. The dry mouth with the chunky bits. BLEH> I have to get out of bed, brush my teeth and have some coffee. Then I'm good. > > Guys mainly but girls too, it's a question I have wanted to ask for a while > but was somewhat reserved. Guest guest
, my ex's lack of understanding extended well beyond my Samter's symptoms. Suffice it to say I relate very closely to what you wrote. I am hesitant to go into further details, here. However, I want to write enough that you know you're not alone. I'll just list what I've also experienced by haven't yet mentioned: blamed for smells (mine or ambient), blamed for snoring, repeatedly awoken for snoring until I had to leave the room (which is much worse than just asking me to leave), and loss of enjoyment of activities that extend beyond the bedroom (due mostly to the blossoming resentment). I have to admit that, especially before my diagnosis, I didn't understand what I was going through anymore than anyone else. It's hard to expect others to be sympathetic to a problem that was never identified. However, I expect a partner to give his/her partner the benefit of the doubt and be supportive. I definitely gave that (she has psoriasis which went undiagnosed for years and related arthritis that remains undiagnosed as of the last time I spoke to her several years ago) but did not receive any in return. sideways topic > Importance: High > > > > Guys mainly but girls too, it's a question I have wanted to ask for a while > but was somewhat reserved. Guest guest
Bob I sympathise with all that you’ve gone through, sounds very similar to my situation as well. I think that my ex and even my partner now are selfish to the point that they’re really not interested in any names or reasons. Fortunately my daughter is very supportive of me and at times it’s nice to have a shoulder to lean on and even cry in need. Guest guest
Thanks for this topic. I've had low libido for nearly 3 decades and it's been a huge sad issue in our marriage. I used to think it was caused by the depression which I used to think was pyschological - well, why wouldn't I? But I know think the depression is a symptom of this disease, not a result of it. I'm wondering if low libido is caused by the disease (as a symptom) rather than as a result of the symptoms. The symptoms everyone has listed - tiredness, inability to breathe properly, insomnia, worry about breathing and closeness (I feel claustrophic if underneath my husband), lack of fitness, etc are enough to lower libido anyway. I was tested for testosterone and it was below normal, but didn't persist with the treatment. I also thought the prednisolone was to blame, plus the decades of inhaled corticosteriods. Weight gain during pred treatments didn't help either. I'm glad I signed onto this group last week. :-) wishing you good health, peace and prosperity, Beverley

Guest guest
Beverley I’m sure depression is part of it as well. I’ve been on anti depressants for the past five months and have to admit they do make me feel not so ‘on edge’. The weight gain with pred. is really annoying, my last treatment of pred. lasted four months and the weight goes on so fast but takes so long to get rid of. I didn’t really think about it before but if you started listing all the side affects of Samters, I’m sure there’d be many. I've thought of this many times over the past few years and it still makes me sad. There is such a connection between smell and relationships. Guest guest
Dear Steve, It's funny how this disease hits us all differently. I'm with you - I swim a couple of miles a day five days a week, and bike, or run the other days. I crave the pool because it is a great clearing of my sinuses. I had to get my breathing in check once the athsma came on a few years ago, but I found the same releif in exercise that you have. Lately, I can only smell once I'm about an hour into a long run or bike ride. Many of our Samters group have reported that the chlorine in the pool is very hard on them - I do not notice it at all. So far, my libido is doing ok. When I have been on Prednisone, I have had intensive urges and a long lasting interest. My wife gets an anxious look in her eye when she sees me reach for the Prednisone. The first couple of times I took the stuff (Prednisone) I also noticed that I could go faster and longer in the pool, too.Burke samters From: skunkburner@...Date: Tue, 29 Apr 2008 22:47:38 -0300Subject: RE: Re: sideways topic Don’t be hard on yourselves, when I trained a year or so ago 4 times a week I felt great but suffered. Guest guest
Thanks for that, Steve. I've been toying with the idea of joining a gym, but don't trust myself to commit to that. Finding a class is more likely to capture my interest. Re: sideways topic Beverley, As many have said....I know how you feel. I think this is one of the saddest side effects of the disease. I've thought of this many times over the past few years and it still makes me sad. There is such a connection between smell and relationships. Is this why I feel so disconnected with many other people as well? I feel sometimes that I've become quite a recluse over the past few years. I'm wondering how many people in this group are overweight? -Bianca > > Not being able to smell my husband was one of the saddest things I've had to deal with since losing my sense of smell in our early years of marriage. Guest guest
Well, if good exercise clears up the sinuses, this is very interesting. If some lab could identify the chemical involved and package it into a spray...but it would not be patentable since it would be a natural substance. I am probably dreaming aloud. >> Not being able to smell my husband was one of the saddest thingsI've had to deal with since losing my sense of smell in our earlyyears of marriage. Guest guest
Yes, exercise. Unfortunately the mind is willing but the body isn’t! There is one form of exercise I’ve found that I can do without breathing heavy like an obscene phone call and that’s pilates. I saw an column in the local newspaper by two fitness trainers and thought I’d go and check it out. I spoke to one of them and she recommended I give circuit training a complete miss and go to her partner who was a pilates instructor. This I did and turns out he takes four to a group and personalizes each program according to the person. I decided to give it a go and did the six week course. Unfortunately didn’t do another as it was rather expensive but he was fantastic and I achieved really great results, lost quite a bit of weight, toned up well and as a result my breathing improved. Just wish it wasn’t so expensive though otherwise I’d love to return. Guest guest
Thanks for that feedback. I tried a pilates video a few times a while back. I found I was really uncomfortable laying on the floor. Is that a thing one gets used to? Re: sideways topicWell, if good exercise clears up the sinuses, this is very interesting. Guest guest
Walking is one of the most effective and easiest forms of exercise to do. If you can get a 30 minute walk in each day, or even a couple of 15 minute walks in you would probably notice a huge difference. As you get more fit, you can speed up or walk for longer. You don't need to start by running races, just put one foot in front of the other and move more I find that exercise and eating healthy helps with my symptoms ALOT. When I miss many workouts or eat horribly for more than a day or two I can definitely tell a difference. Della --- <soniarobins@...> wrote: > Yes, exercise.
