I think this is a question you need to be asking your GP really

as each person differs so much and he’s the one with your medical records.

My ENT has put me on Prednisone prior to all my surgeries

regardless.

Subject: Do I have to take Prednisone before surgery?

Ok - I'm looking for opinions. I'm going in for

my 2nd surgery on the 23rd of Dec and my ENT has put me on 40mg of Prednisone

for 2 weeks and then 2 weeks tapering off.

The problem is - I was just on a 10 day supply of Prednisone within the past

month.

I'm wondering what are others thoughts on not taking the Prednisone before

surgery. I'm really NOT wanting to go through another round so soon.

I have had 4 sinus surgeries - and before each of them they have had me take

prednisone. As another person posted, it is something that your physician must

have a reason for doing. In my particular case, inflammation is a huge problem

and multiple docs (4 surgeries, 3 different docs) felt that the success of the

procedures would be increased by taking prednisone pre-op. I hate the stuff

too, but sadly it is the only thing that seems to combat the inflammation in my

case.

I was on a monthly Prednisone dose before surgery (60mg X 3 days/month) and my

surgeon had me do a dose starting a few days before the surgery even though it

was ahead of my monthly schedule. He said that he wanted to reduce polyp

size/inflammation prior to surgery--to make the surgery easier on me and

him--but not to reduce the polyps so much that they were invisible, the latter

obviously not a problem from what he said post-surgery. Hopefully, the surgery

will reduce the need for Prednisone any time soon (after you taper off), which

is the comfort I took in the extra dose beforehand.
