Guest guest
Anosmia is really the pits. Can't smell or fully enjoy food and drink. Experience the same return of smell if I take prednisone. Have you lost your smell too? Hello i'm new here. I'm just curious to how many of you have permantely lost your sense of smell since first getting symptoms. I was around 12 or 13 when i got my first sneeze but this sneeze was different, i sneezed and sneezed for ever never thinking anything of it and it started happening often, after that i lost my smell never to have it back unless i was put on predisone.,I never had this issue I had a great sense of smell so i was shocked to lose it. After that i started to exprience asthma, never had that before, now it is so bad i'm on ssi for it, been in a coma for my asthma whith machine to breathe for me,kinda bad, asprirn will put me in a full on asthma attack where i completely can't breathe and be put in hospital and i swell up. When i was in my late 20's i got my first round of polyps. had surgery for that. Now the polyps are back and i have not gotten air in my nose in 5 months, just mouth breathing and lack of sleep from that. I'm pregnant so i can't have surgery and can't be put on predisone now but i still am going to go to the doctor monday and he might be able to take out the polyps he can see and get at, hopefully in his office. I really am curious if many or if any of you can still smell? I'm 37 so haven't gotten to smell for years and years. I really miss that. Guest guest
Welcome , Yes, I too lost my sense of smell when I was a teenager. The polyps and asthma didn’t manifest until I became pregnant in my 30’s. I had monthly prednisone tapers during my second pregnancy. It does not hurt the baby. A lack of oxygen will. I’ve been desensitized to aspirin and take 1300mg/day. This has controlled the polyps and given me back my sense of smell to 70%. I hope your ENT can remove some of your polyps in the office. Guest guest
The only time I seem to get my sense of smell back is after a course of pred. Trouble is not only does your smell go but some of sense of taste as well. I remember last time I got my sense of smell back and my full taste buds kicked in I went crazy eating, everything tasted so incredible. I told my doctor that I’m sure the reason I put on weight is because I’m still trying to get that sense of satisfaction from tasting a meal but can’t get it. Guest guest
Hi , I had Samter's with my 3rd pregnancy and I remember I had to take at least 2-3 courses of prednisolone for asthma during the pregnancy. My baby was absolutely fine, weighing over 8lb and she's had no problems as a result of my steroid taking during pregnancy. I'm sure if you really needed to take them, that would be ok with your doctor - after the first trimester. Becky <LissaMarie3@...> wrote: Hello i'm new here. Guest guest
You and another one on here told me the same thing about both being put on steroids while pregnant and everything was fine with baby. So i will ask him about that if he can't get to the polyps in office that are visable that maybe i can be put on a small dose of steroids to shink them and let me have some relief and sleep now while i can before a baby is here. Thanks you two. Re: Have you lost your smell too? Hi , I had Samter's with my 3rd pregnancy and I remember I had to take at least 2-3 courses of prednisolone for asthma during the pregnancy. Guest guest
It's amazing how similar all these stories sound. It developed very much the same way with me, only faster (I'm 25). Haven't had a sense of smell, off-prednisone, for going on 2 or 3 years. Last time I took prednisone, it didn't come back at all. Had surgery 4 or 5 years ago to remove literally two pints of polyps and I'm probably around 70 to 80% as bad off as I was back then, again. Does anyone else here struggle financially to deal with it? In all the stories I read, that element seems strangely missing. To me, it's a choice between...a) paying bills... saving up to buy a ring for my girlfriend...or c) a surgery I know I'm inevitably going to have to have that'll cost thousands of dollars even though I have health insurance. I know I can't be the only one trying to cope with these sort of basic needs, here. It's like not being sick enough not to work and yet feeling awful enough you can't make the kind of money needed to get healthy. Sorry if this is overly depressing. Sound familiar to anyone else? Guest guest
lisa, i have not had a sense of smell for 25 years since this started with i was 23, unless using prednisone. then i run around like a crazy person sniffing everything i can! you should see me in a candle shop. i am used to not smelling things now, though i still have a sense of taste even though it is " off " a little. i tend to overseason my food so when i cook i am careful for others sake. as for being preggers and samters, that depends on your doctor and the treatment you get. i have had six children and been on prednisone through most of them and they had no side effects from it. i did lose one child to a medication called marax long ago because my ent did not know how dangerous it was in pregnancy. got a new doc and everything went well through the other pregnancies. good luck. with samterites, 1/3 will stay the same during pregnancy, 1/3 will get better, and 1/3 will get worse. for me, it actually depended on the sex of the child. i got worse with my girls and had to hospitalized most of my pregnancies, and better with my boys to almost needing no meds. i asked the doc if they could mimic me being pregnant with a male child so i could be cured but he couldn't figure out how to do that. trudy. > > Hello i'm new here. Guest guest
I have no sense of smell. It does not come back with prednisone. I even had polyp surgery and it still didn't come back. I've been pregnant 3 times. Each time I took prednisone in the 1st trimester. As the pregnancy progressed the samters symptoms decreased to a more manageable degree; my nose stops running, my asthma symptoms lesson. I've also taken prednisone starting about 38 weeks to reduce the polyps so I could breath through my nose while laboring. > > Hello i'm new here. Guest guest
i had a kenalog shot last year and it lasted for four months...i had a sense of smell with it, my breathing stayed somewhat under control and my sinus felt better. i could also walk more without the back pain the fibro has caused. my doc will only do one a year. i felt pretty good and wished i could have them every three months...ah well. it is a prednisone like medication that lasts a long time with one shot. trudy. > > > > Hello i'm new here.
