Guest guest
I am so sorry Lory... I do hope you can find a more friendly way to treat your symptoms. This question is to everyone, is our only way to relief pain taking CORTISONE or OPIATES? Does anybody take any other kind of pain relievers? Silvina From: "truelori" <lori@...>Reply-samters To: samters Subject: Medrol dosageDate: Fri, 05 Oct 2007 17:06:38 -0000 So I am having an MRI in a couple of weeks, and they said because I am allergic to aspirin they won't give me the MRI without premedicating with Medrol. This seems completely ridiculous to me, as I can't imagine there is any cross-reactivity between an MRI contrast solution and aspirin. Besides, I've had MRIs before with gadolinium and I did not have a reaction and was not premedicated.I don't really want to take the Medrol. I've been on dexamethasone on and off for the chemo, in addition to the many years I've been on and off prednisone, and I'm already showing signs of Cushing's such as the moon face. I am almost done with chemo and then I am hoping no more steroids for a while.Anyway, the dose of Medrol they want me to take is 32 milligrams. This seems really high to me. Isn't the normal dose of Medrol like 4 milligrams a day? I do NOT do well on high-dose steroids. I have at times been suicidal on them, well, kind of hallucinatory where I wanted to jump off the roof. Plus I think that some forms of Medrol have yellow #5 in them, which I'm really starting to believe is more related to some of my symptoms than I thought in the past. For instance, I recently took some Tylenol without food dye because I wa desperate to take something, and not only did it work great for my pain but I noticed no worsening of Samter's symptoms, as I had in the past. I am 100 percent sure in the past I always took the capsules, not the clear white tablets, of Tylenol.Anyway, any thoughts on how high this dosage of Medrol is and how much of a fight I should put up? I never really thought of steroids as preventing anaphylactic reactions anyway. I certainly had reactions to aspirin as well as terrible asthma while on steroids. Benadryl is the only thing I know of that might help me (besides epi) in such a situation.ThanksLori in NY Help yourself to FREE treats served up daily at the Messenger Café. Stop by today! Guest guest
The Medrol is not for my symptoms, it's for a requirement for an MRI test I have to have. They won't give me the contrast without premedication with Medrol due to my history with aspirin (which makes absolutely no sense at all. It's like if someone was allergic to mushrooms, which I am, not letting them eat any vegetables without being premedicated.) Anyway in terms of pain relievers, many people here are desensitized and hence can take just about any pain reliever they want. I do not ever take steroids unless I absolutely have to, so I would never take them for pain. I do know of certain enzymes that you can purchase from the health food store that will help with some types of inflammatory pain, as well as a complex I use called Ultra InflamX that treats inflammation amazingly well. Other than that for dental/sinus pain I have to take Dilaudid. It's pretty much all I can tolerate. Although as I mentioned, I did recently find it possible to take Tylenol. Some with Samters do react. I wonder if anyone with the reaction has tried the white tablets without the food dye, because I am convinced now that I was reacting to the food dye in the coored capsules, not to the Tylenol itself, but it's hard to know for sure. Guest guest
Yes, paracetamol has never given me a reaction, but I quit taking it when I started with strong averse reactions to other pain killers. I would like to try paracetamol under a strictly controlled situation, like in a sanatory or something, but apparently this isn't done in Argentina... I don't dare try it out on my own. My homeopathic doctor has offered to try it out in his office with a IV just in case, but I still dont dare. My last reactions were far too strong and I'm afraid of dying. Yet, I feel I must try it out. I hate having to take corticoids, and besides they not always relief pains, especially not tummy aches, or headaches. Thanks for the tip, though. I'll see if I dare try it out with my Dr. Sil From: Margaret <maggieuig1@...>Reply-samters To: <samters >Subject: RE: Medrol dosageDate: Fri, 5 Oct 2007 19:48:42 -0700 I use acetaminophen (paracetamol) as a pain killer and find that it works very well. Guest guest
They don't use that same type of contrast for a MRI scan. The contrast for a CAT scan is totally different. Besides I've never reacted to either kind and I've had many, many CAT scans and one MRI scan. And for this MRI they said it was only because I have had anaphylactic shock before, it didn't matter if it was to mushrooms or aspirin or chlorinated water or whatever the heck it was -- But the thing is I DO react to steroids! They make me CRAZY. There's no way I can go in that MRI machine for 45 minutes on a huge dose of steroids. I'll go insane. Guest guest
I wish I could go to sleep during it, Gwen. I won't be able to cover my eyes because I'll be on my stomach with my breasts sticking through two big holes. Are you claustrophobic? I am severely claustrophobic, so that's why I'm apprehensive to begin with, and the idea of being buzzed up on steroids AND in an MRI tube just makes me terrified even more! Sheesh. Just wondering still if anyone here knows what a normal Medrol dosage would be, if 32 milligrams in one dose is very high. It seems like it is! Guest guest
Unfortunately they won't be premedicating me with Valium. For one, I don't do well on Valium (it makes me more nervous than without it -- I tend to have idiosyncratic reactions to a lot of drugs). If I want to take something, it has to be on its own. But I don't think they want me going to sleep on my stomach anyway. They didn't say anything about having a designated driver or anyone to come with me either. But I was planning on taking Ativan, which does help me and I can take. But there's no way it can counteract the effects of a large dose of steroids. I've had to go to the emergency room in the past on steroids because I had such severe psychosis-like reactions. I did have an MRI in January and would not allow me to have any calming drugs, would not allow me to listen to music, burned me with the gadolinium, which leaked from the IV -- it was basically a complete nightmare. So you can see why I might be even more afraid now. Anyway this is really all pretty off-topic for the Samters ilst, it's more I just want to know who knows about Medrol dosages! I'm trying to guage how I would react to it. Can anyone tell me what a normal dose of Medrol is and if 32 milligrams is high? Lori
Guest guest
Lori, personally i do not think that 32mg is that high. when i have had bad asthma attacks i have had to start at 60-80mg. but my body has become pretty used to prednisone. i do know people who act crazy on 5mg so i guess it just depends on the person. just make sure that you taper off it and not just take the one dose of 32mg. i hope this helps. laura > > Unfortunately they won't be premedicating me with Valium. Guest guest
This is my fault, I brought in the thing about the polyps. But for me polyps and sinusitis are hand in hand, so clearing up sinusitis is very temporary in someone with polyps, in my opinion. But I think the onions are supposed to be for the sinusitis, not the polyps. Sorry I did not mean to confuse. Guest guest
thanks, ! I haven't taken Medrol is years so I really didn't know the dosage. BUt they don't want me to taper off. They want me to take one dose of 32 milligrams and that's it. I am on Decadron now every week for three days for my chemotherapy, and I really don't want to have to take the steroids on another day in addition to that. I've got Cushing's-like symptoms from it such as a moon face. Thanks again Lori > > > > Unfortunately they won't be premedicating me with Valium. Guest guest
Interesting, -- I actually DO think my claustrophobia might relate to Samters because it's that feeling of not being able to breathe. I don't remember having it when I was younger, although it's hard to know. But in general I hate to be in any situation where I feel like I can't breathe like if my mouth is covered because of not being able to breathe through my nose. I don't even like to have an oxygen mask or filter mask on! Guest guest
Singulair is not related to Cushing's syndrome. It is possible this was a coincidence or that your symptoms were caused by something else. Cushing's syndrome is caused by adrenal axis suppression, and there is no evidence to suggest Singulair would have anything at all to do with this. There are some drugs such as antifungals that may interact with the metabolism of steroids in the liver (such as budesonide) and that could cause elevated levels of non-metabolized steroids in the blood, which could cause Cushing's, but you'd have to be on some type of steroid or have some other metabolic problem such as an inherited disorder or an adrenal or pituitary tumor to get Cushing's. Anyway I'm not on Singulair right now -- I haven't really needed my Samters meds (Advair and Singulair) during my chemo treatment. I'll just be glad when I'm done with chemo so I can get off this stupid Decadron. Lori
Guest guest
Thanks, , I am sure the Cushing's symptoms are from the Decadron -- I have been on Decadron basically three days a week for several months because of the chemo. Chemo doesn't cause Cushing's, it's just that I have to be on the steroids because one of the chemo drugs I am on can cause pulmonary edema and other fun things, so the steroids help to keep the fluid build-up down. It should be over soon! The weight gain is really the worst part of it for me so I can't wait to start working on getting the weight off.
