Avi, I too suffer with many Samters related issues. I have a brother who had the exact problem you are describing. He did have a blood vessel cauterized and it worked very well for him. It was a very easy procedure and he has never had an issue with his nose bleeding again. Janeiddelz <avifisher@...> wrote: I did a brief search and didn't see anything on this in the archives so here's my post ... Quick history: Long time (10yrs) samters

sufferer. Surgery twice but polyps return. Desensed twice but saw no benefits. I'm on Rhinocort, Advair and Zyrtec. I take Quercetin for occasional relief - I find it really works as long as I take it but no lasting effects if I don't. Since the winter i've been having frequent bloody noses, like 2-3 times per week on average, often in the AM shower but also seemingly random throughout the day (tonight during dinner). It just feels like my nose is running and there's blood. Sometimes it stops easily sometimes takes a long time. I just hold the nostril shut with a paper towel sit down and wait and wait and wait. Me ENT suggested once a day I put vaseline on a q-tip and put it up my nose, towards the front (up, not back). I think this is meant to lubricate the blood vessels on the wall of my nose but I'm still bleeding often and he said if that doesn't work he would cauterize the blood vessels in my nodr. This

seems awfully medieval and just a bad idea. Anyone have any similar experience with frequent bloody noses? what do you do about it? why do you get them? Has anyone ever have blood vessels in the nose cauterized? Did it work? Were there side effects? Would they recommend it? My ENT, by the way, believes samters is fungal but I don't know if I agree with him. Anyway, thanks in advance for responding if you have a similar experience or something to share. / Avi

Hello Avi,I know cauterization can sound unpleasant, but I understand that it really is a simple and relatively safe minor procedure. Likely the corticosteroids (Rhinocort) you've (we've) been using has caused such atrophy of the nasal tissue that the blood vessels are more exposed and more likely to break, causing more frequent nosebleeds. I believe that your Dr. would use a local anaesthetic, then cauterize, There may be a small scab that should be left alone; and further bleeding needs to be reported at once. But overall, cauterization of the mucosal surface is far less scary than surgery or ASA desensitization for an ASA allergic person. It's true that dryness can lead to nosebleeds, too, and lubricating the nares can help. But if this doesn't do the trick, it's not unusual to consider cauterization. I admit I've not had to resort to cauterization yet, but would consider it it my nosebleeds were more frequent. jk(About the fungal cause...who knew? I don't see how that connects with the aspirin allergy, but I don't know enough about the subject. I know fungal infections are hard to treat because the remedies can often cause serious side effects. All I can say is, yuck! But it would be good to know.)On Sep 21, 2007, at 7:40 PM, iddelz wrote:I did a brief search and didn't see anything on this in the archives so here's my post ... Hello,

I am on ASA and it used to be that whenever I also took prednisone I would get

a bloody

nose, the kind that just poured out like water. My ENT cauterized my nose. It

hurt like crap

and left a black mark in my nose that did not go away for a few days. It looked

like I had

dried blood in my nose that I did not clean. Anyways, I have not had a bloody

since.

Hi, I too had my nose quarterised as I had frequent nosebleeds in the early days of Samters. It was quick and easy to have done and I've never had a serious nosebleed since, but occaisionally get minor ones. It's worth doing if needs must! Thanks to everyone for their responses. I've done some reading as

well and at least someone out their suggest a Vitamin K deficiency

may contribute to the bloody noses. So i'll first try behavior

modification and add more leafy greens to my diet before going with a

medical solution, towards which I feel a little better about.

My doctors views on allergic fungal sinusitis I think are summarized

on Wellington Tichenor's website.

http://www.sinuses.com/fungal.htm

Here's a longer study on the topic ...

http://archotol.ama-assn.org/cgi/reprint/132/2/173.pdf

My doctor believes its an immune issue and at our last appointment

said he " had a feeling " that a bone marrow transplant would cure the

polyps. Of course that's rather extreme but I encouraged him to do a

study of that, since his hospital does BM transplants he could survey

all patients get a prior history see if any had samters before and

what their conditions are now but he said such interdisciplinary

behavior is frowned upon at most large hospitals. (I just told him he

was too lazy to do the work but i don't blame him for that; i'm lazy

too)

As a simple proxy, has anyone here ever had a bone marrow transplant?

If so, did they have samters before or did they get it after?

thanks / avi
