Bihar Bans Sex-determination Tests

In a bid to check female foeticide, the Bihar Government has declared

pre-natal sex determination, a penal offence attracting a minimum

imprisonment for three years and a fine of upto Rs.10,000. Doctors

found guilty of undertaking pre-natal sex determination test for a

second time would be liable to imprisonment for five years and a fine

of upto Rs. 50,000.

All diagnostic centres, private clinics and laboratories performing

pathological tests, X-ray and ultra sonography had been asked to

display on signboards that they do not conduct sex determination

tests. Those not complying with the directive would be sternly dealt

with.
